There’d Been More than 40,000 Cases of Reported Child Protective Services, of Which, Sixty-Seven-Percent Involved Forms of Physical Abuse

The statistics on child abuse here, and, what these individuals are, doing about it!  Off of the Newspapers, translated…

Robbing a Bank in a Delivery Person’s Uniform, Took His Wife and Son Out to Travel Using the Money He’d Robbed, Pretended that He Didn’t Do it

Thought he had, gotten away with it, that he was, in the clear, but, nope, he got caught!  That just showed, how you will get caught, no matter how well-thought-out your plans for committing a crime is, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

Getting Away with $63,000 in Cash, Thought He Got Everything Covered, as He Exited the Hotel, He Was Arrested, and Gave the Excuse of Being Pressured Too Hard with His Mortgage of Eight Million Dollars N.T.

On the 25th the Sanxing Bank in Chiaotou District of Kaohsiung was robbed by a man dressed as a delivery person with a bottle of pepper spray, he got away with $63,000N.T.s, the police arrested the robber, Tseng; the day following his robbery of the local bank, Tseng took his wife and children who didn’t know what he did to Nantou on vacation, as they were checking out, the police came to arrest him, he was dumbstruck of being caught, told the cops, that he was pressured too hard by his eight million dollars N.T. of mortgage that was why he’d done it, and he’d only gotten away with a little over $60,000N.T.s, was taken into custody on robbery charges.

The police investigated and found, that Tseng (age 30) worked in the sales of medical equipment, lives in Gangshan District, with no priors, because of not having a stable source of income, and pressured by the eight million mortgage, he’d selected the Sanxing Bank that was closest to his home to commit the crime.

using a toy gun to rob a bank

Tseng had started planning the robbery for a month, and, bought the car he used his the robbery from his friend for $30,000N.T., and switched out the license plate, then gone to the toy store, bought an air gun for $2,000N.T.s, and bought the delivery uniform from online, falsified his identity to commit the crimes, thought he wouldn’t get caught.

At 3:30 on the 25th in the afternoon, Tseng drove the car to the bank, parked outside for a little more than ten minutes, as the bank was closing, in the uniform of the delivery service driver, with the helmet over his head, pepper spray and the airgun, barged into the bank, he then sprayed the security guards’ faces, then, rammed to the counter, and, grabbed a little over $63,000N.T. in cash at the counters, it took him no more than a minute to commit the robbery.

After Tseng got the money from the bank, he’d driven the car, escaped to Jen-Wu District, then, turned to the Yi-Da Shopping Parking garage, and left his getaway vehicle on the third-floor of the underground parking garage, then took the cab, to Veteran’s Memorial Hospital in Zuoying, drove home in his own vehicle, thought his plan was perfect, and on the 26th, eh took his wife and two-year-old young son to Jiji, Nantou to travel.

and now, you get, caught!

photo from online

The police traced the street surveillance all the way there, and by the 26th, they’d started suspecting Tseng’s involvement, on the very evening, they ambushed in Nantou, and at ten yesterday, as Tseng took his wife and son to leave the hotel, they’d gone up to arrest him; Tseng and his wife were shocked, Tseng’s wife inquired, “could you have the wrong man?”, the police showed the pepper spray found, the air gun, and the helmet Tseng tossed, consoled with him, “Think about your family”, that was when Tseng admitted to robbing the bank.

Tseng claimed, that he’d spent the little over $60,000N.T. he’d robbed from the bank, he’d ditched the outfit of the delivery person, he’d originally wanted to rob more from the bank, but he saw the gates of the bank coming down, and can only, escape out of the bank.

And so, this, is how one wrong move, can screw you over for life, and, because you wanted to have the money easy, and not work hard for it, that’s why you resorted to robbing the bank, and now, you’re caught, and you are looking at time behind bar, and still using the excuse of how you want to give your families a better life for why you’d, taken the easy way???  Yeah, the insanity plea might work better as your defense for robbing the bank here.

The Wishes for a First-Grader

Intrinsic or extrinsic motivations of learning in children here, translated…

That day, there was a seminar at my son, Sky’s school, the topic was on the children’s problems in learning.  The lecturer had the background of psychology, and she’d, explained the means from the biological, and the psychological angles, of how our children learn, their memories, and mindsets, and taught us tips on how to help our young get more motivated in learning, to help them learn better.

I’d jotted down the lecture notes, looking at how the powerpoint slides printouts, with the parents, all around me, taking notes, listening tentatively, asking questions.

In the stage of pressures from school, as the paces of learning the children had, doesn’t quite match up to the parents’ expectations, there are bound to be, conflicts, and, the parents and children may get on each other’s nerves, and, that would be the fork in the road from when they will no longer, be close to one another.

the motivations for learning, for children should come, from within, like this…

for the, pure, joys…photo from online

The lecturer was amazing, and her words made us all agreed, and, she’d given us a ton of practical means, and, being layback in all of my classes, I’d not gotten hurried to write anything down, thought: thank heavens, that Sky didn’t have anything that worried me in his learning, and there weren’t that many times we’d conflicted.

Every child has a different nature, maybe, he’s naturally driven to learn new things, or maybe, because we believed in him, simply.

Because I keep on believing, that children have the strong motivations to learn, and their motives for learning wasn’t from to avoid getting punished, not because they wanted the rewards of a video game, treats, even the commends from, the parents.

It’s for themselves, because they KNEW they can manage it, and, that sense of achievement after they’d gained whatever it is they wanted to gain.  Like how the adults ran the marathons, that sense of, “there’s no limit to what I can do” as we crossed the finish lines, or like the tennis player, smacked that winning hit, and screamed out loud, what, I can, do it, that sense of, accomplishment of the self.

It’s not about the cash prizes, the external rewards, but, from that sense of motivation to be better, to grow from within themselves.

Children are exactly like that, simpler, even, it’s just, that we adults, don’t really, believe that.  We’d rolled around in the world too long, with the experiences, the affirmations from the adults in our lives, and, if we don’t used the means of rewards and/or punishments, we can’t, get our own young to do what we tell them to do.

Sometimes, we just, don’t have enough faith, enough trust in our own, selves, and our own, children.

What’s worse, was that we sometimes, make things, worse, we used our own “ways”, to make them get motivated by the external factors, that they’d slowly, forgotten, the more important, intrinsic motivations of what drove them to do the things we tell them to.

And, this motive that’s, from within, is way more powerful, than all the external, materialistic, rewards, stronger than what we can, ever imagine…………last winter vacation, Sky went to a martial arts camp.  Martial arts required a ton of energy to learn, especially, for a child who’s, muscles hadn’t matured yet, these basic trainings are considered, tortures to them.  The martial arts instructor, after that very first class, had the student write down the goals of what they wanted to accomplish after the five-day long camp.  As Sky got down on the floormats, in his fatigue, sweating like crazy, turned it in to his martial arts instructor, I’d accidentally found that he’d, drawn a weird looking figure, throwing the punches, with the barely legible words, “I want to be a better version of my self”.

I’d stared at the page, remained silent for a long, long, time.  This page was written using a cute figure, and the words he’d just learned to write in Chinese, mixed in, with the phonetic spellings, but his words, moved me.

And so, this, is the importance, to have the children feel motivated toward learning, and it’s just, unfortunate, how the schools in the world right now, don’t focus on teaching the kids to find their own motivations for learning, because the schools are focused on the academics, the scholastic performances, and, the children may be performing up to “standards”, because they can’t afford not to, because if they don’t measure up, they get, punished for it, and that would, kill off their loves for learning for sure.

He Had Randomly Abducted a Female Student, Sexually Assaulted Her, Got Caught and Taken into Custody

In the BROAD day LIGHT, the early morning hours, was when this had, happened, which makes the world, that much, LESS, safer still, a crime of, opportunity, with this, perp mistakenly believe he could, easily, get away, but he didn’t, off of the Newspapers, translated…

The worker at a car wash, Huang became aroused on the early morning hours of the sixteenth, he’d randomly found a victim, on the streets, nearby the Zhenchien Canal, he’d found a female high school on foot, going to school, ran her over with his scooter, then, dragged her into the dark alleys, and raped her; the female student screamed loudly for help, that was when Huang quickly made his, getaway, the detectives followed the leads, and arrested him two days ago, and, charged him on forced sexual act, and asked the courts to have him into police custody, which the courts signed off on.

Huang tried evading arrest, excused his behaviors as being pressed by economics, that he was, having lapses in judgment, that’s why he’d, found a target and, attempted to rape her.  But, the investigators based off of the means that Huang had searched the victims randomly, and, put on the gloves, covered his license plate, and changed his outfit, suspected, that he may have been involved in another case, and are currently, chasing all the possible leads.

The detective investigated, Huang (age 36), on the early morning of March 16th, rode out from his residence in Daliao, Kaohsiung, circled around the city, and randomly searched for a target, found the female student, in her uniform, walking on the sidewalks, seeing that no one was around, he’d rammed the school-age girl over, then, got off his vehicle, covered her mouth, dragged her into the dark alley close by, then, raped her with gloves on.

The female student, was surprised by the attacks, and started screaming, continually struggled to break free, and fight him off, the locals who were out exercising heard her cries for help, came to her rescue, as Huang saw the locals come, he’d immediately stopped raping the girl, got on his scooter, and got away.

The police chased the leads, found the black coat, black pants Huang wore to commit the attempted rape in, and as he’d escaped he’d changed his outfits to cover his tracks, and, covered his license plate with two helmets before he attempted to rape the adolescent girl, as the passersby testified that it was Huang, two days ago, the police arrested him at his residence in Daliao, and confiscated the gray coat and light blue jeans, sneakers he’d switched into after he’d committed the attempted rape.

And so, this is a crime of, opportunity, and, this LOSER made a miscalculation, that girls are easy to rape, because they’re not, because we struggle, to break free from you fuckers who are, trying to, RAPE us, and, surely enough, this MOTHER @#$%ER (maxed out!), still got caught, with the evidence he couldn’t destroy in time, and he will be looking at hard time, as the laws to punish these criminals of sex offense, just got heavier, recently.

As the Divorced Couple Became Estranged “Friends”

How we’d, gone after each other’s throats as we just got divorced, then how we’d, switched our ways of interacting with each other, because the children, and realized, that we need to, still be a “family”, to give the kids, a safe home that they can grow up healthy in, even AFTER we’re, no longer, together anymore!  Translated…

Finalizing the divorce between my ex and I, wasn’t through the mediations of what we’d come to terms with, and agreed upon, but like the breakups in the soap operas, in the end I’d had to seek out an attorney from Hong Kong, to allow us both, to sit down peacefully, to discuss the custody of our children, and what comes, next.

From before this face-to-face meeting, we were only, willing to, contact through the phones, and the, written correspondences, but, that man who was once, willing to, soften down after a fight with a bowl of beef noodle, the woman who traveled over five hundred kilometers away from her own comfort zone, for love, in that year of using guns, knives, and the words to attack one another, brought out the worst side of us—the screams, the shouts, the cusses, the threats, because the structures of how we’d, interacted.

In the close to a hundred calls we’d had with one another, there’s no, reasonable conclusions, and, back and forth, the discussions we shared zoomed in on how ill-fitted we were as one another’s, partners in marriage, and the distrust became, a huge gap, that presented itself before us, that we simply, can’t, get, across.

illustration from UDN.com

As the switch of our relationship happened, we were separated by the Taiwanese Strait, the communication became more difficult, and it’d, made things go milder between us, from love into hate, then, into, nothing, we’d not imposed our discord onto the kids.  And even so, I’d still tried to make those around me, to not care about how selfish I was, in the best interest of my own young, to get my young child of not-yet-two years of age to side with me.

During those days of trials, being understood and empathize by others, was my, best, medicine, I was like a soldier, readying myself for war that came at any moment in time, after the shortened time of recovery I’d needed, I’d, carried that rifle, back to, battle again.  We both only remembered, that we carried what’s in the best interests of our separate, selves, as well as for the best interests of the kids, marched on, “pay up the alimony in the total sums of $800,000N.T. all at once, if you want to see the children, please fly to Taiwan.”  We’d used, the harshest, the duality of ways, of make one another, give up, it seemed, that whoever uses the worst means, to bring out the darkest parts of who we are, gets to, crack open that champagne bottle of celebrate a victory.

Many years after we’d finally, agreed upon the means of our divorces, through the mediators, we would still find ways, to prod one another, I’d asked him, why he’d not sent me the alimony for the children on time, he’d asked me, why I’d not provided the grade sheets of the academic performances of the children.  This is, after many years of, adapting, readjusting, that I’d weathered through in my own life and he’d, weathered through in his own life too, and now, as he’d asked me, “would it be okay, if I send the alimony and child support on a later date?”, I’d told him it would be okay, whenever suits you.  As I’d asked if you’d, prepared the birthday present for our young?  He’d told me he bought a pair of sneakers, and that I’ll buy a pair for you too.

I guess, we both knew why we’d selected each other to head down that aisle together from before, because, we saw light, and believed it to be, light.  As parents, we’d, started asking ourselves, are we doing this, for the benefits of our young, or are we, doing it, for our selves only?  What are we, showing to our young, how we are, facing these problems, with a positive attitude?  Are we, the role models for them for their own future?  That was, for the best interests, of the child.  We thought that the kids are the ones needing the protections, when in truth, we are, protecting our refusal to admit to defeat.  And we also, must, admit, that children are, braver, and knew what the simplest forms of love is, compared to us, the adults.

And so, this is, how the two of you, changed, adapted to interact with one another, more amicably, after the two of you got divorced, because it’s for the sake of your own young, because you need to set a good example, to show them, that even though our marriage failed, we are, still, a good family to each other, giving your young, a secure home to grow up in.

The Day We Harvested the Taros

An ordinary day, of farm work, during the outbreaks of MERS-CoV, translated…

“The taros will rot away if we don’t harvest them, muala, come help”, on this morning, as I was getting that egg pancake out of the pan, kayngu came in, left these words, and then, left.

I’d, gulfed down my breakfast in a hurry, gone over to the workers’ shack, tuned out, the taros are already, set into the baskets, my mother, my eldest, second, and third aunt are all, there, moving in the stools, ready to split up the harvest.

“kayngu was in the fields at five in the morn, and there’s still that final row of it left”.  My eldest aunt pointed to the distance, kayngu’s tiny form, the back bent, head lifted, then bent over again.

In my flipflops, I’d, stumbled across the rocks, from time to time, entered into the field, the originally large like the umbrella leaves of the taro, don’t know when they’d become, curled over, with the edges, burnt and yellowed, looking, quite, pitiful.

“There wasn’t enough rain that’s why they’d become like this”, then, kayngu fell, silent again.  Stayed focused on the till, loosening the soils around the taro, I knew there was more she wanted to say, but, there were, the shortened sentences and words that finally, came to her tongue, and rolled out.

The summers like the rollercoaster, first, the water provisions stopped, then, the electricity shortage, “well, at least there’s, not the outbreaks!”, as these words came, then, the cases of confirmed contractions rose to three figures per day.  The cities and towns stopped, the classes stopped being held, no dining in, work-from-home, what we saw from the news, the papers from before, like that delayed assignment that we had to do, and we can only, make up for, one by, one.

like this…

photo found online

My aunts gathered around in a circle, put on their gloves, with a tiny sickle each, started, shaving off the tough exterior of the taro, getting rid of what’s rotted away, and, tossed the good pieces into the baskets.  And, they would blurt out sentences in the mother tongue, and everybody would burst out laughing, and I can only, laugh, awkwardly.

“put on your gloves, or, you will itch like crazy when you touch the taros”, kayngu turned to tell me, her voice, steady as it’d always, been.  Kayngo, with her finger against the knife turned the taro around, and, shaved off the rotten parts of the taro away, and, I can’t tell which one’s rougher, kayngu’s hands, or the skins of the taros.

Normally, we don’t see my aunt at this time, after the daughters were all married off, they’d lived in the three houses neighboring each other, my eldest aunt usually followed my uncle out as he is a trucker, my second aunt, a nurse, my youngest aunt would go to work at a nearby factory, and because they have different schedules, they’d not gotten the opportunities to gather.  And it’s now, giving off that illusion of the New Year’s holidays to me right now.

illustration from UDN.com

Everybody’s hands flew, the taros piled up higher, higher, and higher, “normally, how long does it take mom to do it alone!” my youngest aunt complained.  “Third stage alerts…mask up………if you have a fever, go to the hospitals right away…………”, the public announcement in the village came from afar, the air vibrated, like the alarms, buzzing off.  Everybody stopped working, it’s just, that we can’t hear the warnings clearly working in the fields, the sound got severed off from time to time, we’d, tilted our ears to the sounds, then, returned back to what we were working on at hand, then, continued carrying on in casual conversations.

And so, this, is how this family stays with its normal routines during the outbreaks, and, because life doesn’t stop moving forward, because we’re all living in the epidemic, and people are cherishing these, ordinary moments they get to share with their loved ones, more than they used to.

The Rebellious Son Hauled a Keg of Gasoline, Committed Arson, His Mother and Younger Brother Also Got Injured

Another leech here!  Off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

The man, Liao in Nantou, was suspected of being upset from getting nagged by his own mother with whom he is living with, two days ago, he was suspected of committing arson by pouring gasoline right outside his home, destroyed two scooters, his mother and younger brother were both injured, as well as he too, all were taken to the hospital, and not in critical condition; the police went to the hospital to take Liao into protective custody, arrested him on public endangerment.  The neighbors told, that Liao is a “leech” who’d worked odds and ends, had been long-term emotionally unstable, with prior arson on record, his families, as well as the neighbors all saw him as trouble.

The police investigations found, the forty-one-year-old Liao is unwed, lives with his seventy-six year-old mother, and forty-year-old younger brother together at Changnan Road, two days ago around four in the afternoon, he rode to a gas station close to his home, used three empty plastic buckets, bought fifteen liters of gas, as he got home, he’d, poured the gas outside of the two scooters parked by his home on the walkways, called out that he was setting the fires to them, his mother, younger brother came outside, to try and talk him out of it.

The neighbors saw and called the cops, the substation sent two officers, that was when Liao turned on the lighter, lit up the scooters, and the other flammable materials, his mother, him and his brother all caught on fire, one of the neighbors suffered smoke inhalation; the officers quickly found the fire extinguisher, put out the fires on the three as well as the fire, reported the fire to the local fire department, rushed all four individuals to the hospital, the two scooters had become, scrap metal.

The neighbor told, Liao would often get his mother to give him money, and when his mother refused and told him to get a job, he would make a huge fuss, he’d once set fires to his own scooter that was parked right outside his own home from before, this wasn’t his first incident, but he was never taken into the hospitals to get treated, and all the neighbors feared, but there was nothing they can do.

So, another case of a, good-for-nothing, troublemaker here, and, this time, he’d, almost committed murder, almost killed his own mother and younger brother because he set the fires to the scooters parked by his house, and he deserves to get locked away for a long, long, long time.

As the Bullets of War, Started Flying…

The bullets of war, they came out, of nowhere, shot through, these, paper-plastered walls, into our homes, and there it stayed, on that box that we turn on every day.

As the bullets of war, started flying they don’t hit us not directly, because we do NOT, live, ANYWHERE NEAR, those, conflict zones of the world, but our lives are still, impacted, as the reports of civilians, getting killed by those, random bombings, another suicide bomber somewhere……………

shattering, NOT just, only, these, panes of, glasses…

photo found online

As the bullets of war, started flying, we’d all been, hit, even those of us, who live, tens of thousands of miles, away.  As the bullets of war, started flying, living in these zones of war, we can only, duck and hide beneath, the paper-thin layers of our quilt covers, and, as night came, the bombs are still, flaring outside, the sounds so loud we can’t, drown them out, we live, in this, never-ending, nightmare.

As the bullets of war, started flying, the promises fell to the ground, and, shattered, like that porcelain doll, so pretty in her face, so, delicate, like our lives…

Is it Reasonable, that the College Students are No Longer Required to Buy the Textbooks for Their Classes?

Why the students nowadays aren’t buying their texts, because the professors’ powerpoint presentation slides print-outs are, enough for them, to pass the exams,  off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

It’d become norm that college students don’t buy the textbooks anymore.  And the reasons for it being, was it due to the economics that they couldn’t afford to?  Rather, it’s how the students felt, that the textbooks they buy, are irrelevant to the courses they are, taking.

But why would the college students feel that the textbooks are, irrelevant to the courses?  The professors now are teaching using powerpoint, and, a lot of the presentations, the professors took a lot of mind to creating, and already had all the information the students are required to have to pass the courses, and, the students can make their own notes off of the PPT slides the professors handed out, to use for their own systematic learning, and, this method of teaching, made the textbooks, less necessary for the students.

Another important reason, was that the evaluations of the lessons, when the areas and contents of the tests are highly corresponding to the powerpoint presentations, then, the students can prepare for the exams using the powerpoint slides, and so, most students wouldn’t spend the money to get the textbooks.

how the professors are teaching using the technologies…photo from online

And, as the students can’t find the link between the exams and the textbooks, this also, became one of the primary reasons why they don’t buy the texts.  And, if the evaluations for learning leaned towards the open-ended, the PPT are supposed to be only used as guidance for how the students learn to think, the directionality of questions they have for learning, of the discussions of the singular cases, the students would then have to collect more data to do their reports, or use the other forms of assessment measures (i.e. the exams), then, what’s in the textbooks, aren’t the keys to the lessons, and, learning no longer based off of what’s written in the texts, and thus, the textbooks became, unnecessary for the students to own.

On the contrary, if there’s the drive for increasing the knowledge bases, and in order for the students to understand the subjects completely, and the powerpoint presentations the professors provided in classes won’t be enough to suffice, then, the idealistic textbooks then become, a necessity to the success of their learning, and, buying the texts would become, the needed decisions of the students.

And so, this article dissected why the students are no longer compelled to spend hundreds of dollars to buy the textbooks they needed for their college studies, because, the professors are, spoon feeding the students their lessons, and, back when I was in school, the exams are based off of the powerpoint presentations used in our courses, and the textbooks became, nothing more than a reference, which was why some of the classmates didn’t spend all their money on the texts, and this is not good, because, the lecture notes should be used for “references” and the textbook, the main means of teaching and learning, and here, it’s, flipped.

The Officer Had Arrested the Man with Prior Possessions of Arms on Record from Before, the Suspect Carried a Grudge, Made the Office, and Hacked the Officer on the Neck, Received a Severe Sentence

How a grudge can easily become, attempted murder!  Off of the Front Page Sections, on crime & punishment, translated…

The third police substation of Hsinchu City, the manager of the Zhonghwa Substation, Wang, on the evening of October of last year, was taking the night off and gathered with his coworkers, and, bumped into the man he arrested for possession of firearms, Dong, after Dong was drunk, he took a sashimi knife, and started hacking at Wang’s neck and head, Wang got more than seventy stitches on his head after being rushed into the E.R., and he was out of danger; afterwards, Dong excused his bad behaviors as misidentifying Wang as someone who’d picked on him back in his high school days, and denied that he was with murderous intentions from wanting to get the officer back for arresting him, but the judge noted, the methods he took to hacking the officer down, believed that there was, the intent for murder, sentenced Dong on attempted murder charges for seven years six months.

On the evening of October third last year, Dong was dining at a restaurant in Hsinchu City, Wang was also there, gathering with his coworkers, Dong recalled that Wang was the officer who’d arrested him in the guns and arms possessions case, went into the kitchen of the restaurant, picked up a knife, started hacking at Wang’s head and neck.  Wang fought back, the rest of his friends saw him getting attacked, and, together, they were able to subdue Dong; after Wang was taken to the hospitals, he was out of danger.

Dong excused his behaviors that he was drunk, that he misrecognized Wang as someone who’d picked on him back in his high school days, and just wanted to teach Wang a lesson, that he’d not intended to kill.  The judge found, that Dong had subdued Wang’s forehead with his hands first, that the behavior kept the victim from getting away, which proved that Dong had the intent for murder.

The judge considered that Dong took a sharpened butcher’s knife and got close to Wang, and, hacked the officer at the neck, that he’d impacted the orders of the society, that this was a major crime, he’d used such malicious means, and not shown any remorse, charged him with attempted murder, and sentenced him to seven years six months.

And so, this, is how a grudge you hold because you were doing something bad toward the police officer who’d, busted your ass got you, more prison time, and this still just showed, how low the emotional control of modern day people are getting, I mean, if it were a wrongful arrest, then I get that you would hold a grudge, but you were arrested for possessions for dangerous arms, and sentenced, and you still didn’t learn your lessons yet.
