In recent years, the scams using internet investments, texts, are growing in number, during the outbreaks, there are the friendship banking scams too, zoomed in toward the elderly populations. A lot of elderly started finding friendships online, thinking that they’d found someone they can pour their hearts out to, but in the end, they’d gotten sold on investing the illegal financial products, like virtual currencies, out-of-country banking investments, etc., etc., and in the end, they’d lost both their invested in emotions, as well as the money too.
Lin, the C.E.O. of Advice Center stated, that the Advice Center has the hotline on financial consulting, and they’d received many kinds of dispute calls, during the outbreaks, they’d found, that the cases of banking fraud using elderly friendships ranked the highest, mostly, the victims were connected by online friendships, and had been persuaded into buying the banking, the investment products, and got extorted, and most were the sales of foreign banking products.
The Banking Advice Center pointed out, that the norms of friendship scams are: the ring through the friendship apps, using the fake photos, set up the profiles, then, find the targets, gained the targets’ trusts, then, having the victims add them to their LINE accounts, then, asking how the victims are every day, gaining their trusts, confirming the financial capabilities of their victims, then, the scam ring will disclose their side business, of how they’d made a ton of money through investments, then, have the victims download a fake app, to encourage investments, after the victims gained the little extra money, then, the ring would encourage them to put in more money, and by the time the victims realized that they’d been scammed, the ring vanished, threatens, or use emotional blackmail on the victims.
Lin told, that the legal bankers, and the banking products fraud need to be substantial, those with the virtual currencies were automatically, eliminated. The phone operators received calls like this, and they’d always asked the victims, “does the individual actually have a certification as a banker? What’s the product the individual sold to you? Suggested the victims search online, for the products they’re being sold on.” But, these products are mostly, foreign stocks, to the point of using banking technologies as a false front.
Lin pointed out, that the Financial Supervisory Commission tried to tackle these scams on three fronts: first, anti-money laundering, to block off the source of money after the scam rings got the scams going, from the banks; second, alert the accounts, helping the law enforcement agencies, to prevent the setting up of dummy accounts using the individuals bank accounts; third, education, to teach the consumers not to invest in illegal products, and to take responsibilities for one’s own actions.
And so, this, is how the elderly became targets, because, they’re all in need of show of cares and concerns in their lives, and, when someone unknown started showing them cares and concerns, they’d, fallen, too deep, because they’re, too lonely, and, this vulnerability is exactly what the scam artists are searching for, and you get scammed.
