Treating the Symptoms, There Are Many Reasons Why a Child’s Handwriting isn’t Neat Enough

The adults, grilling the child: what’s this, HIEROGLYPHICS???  On why the child can’t write legibly, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

As my child started writing for a bit, he’d complained of his hand getting sore, his handwriting is so illegible, can this be improved with practices?  Occupational therapists advised, there are many causes to why a child can’t write legibly, maybe it’s the torse not steady enough, bad posture, the parents need to observe everything; this can be tackled through a simple game, to train the child in her/his grip, and spatial abilities, if the parents demanded that the child keeps on practice her//his writing skills, it may easily cause the exactly opposite outcome of what we want to achieve.

The occupational therapist, Lai told, the torso not being steady enough, bad posture sitting down, shoulder joint, elbow joint, not coordinated enough, uncontrolled movement in the rotations of the forearm, not being able to put your wrist at the right place for support, all of these, can cause the inability to write well.

But most parents believed, that when a child can’t write legibly, it’s because of laziness, or how the child wouldn’t work hard enough to write better, the child occupational therapist, Yu pointed out, the most frequently occurring were, not having enough spatial awareness, writing outside the box, the structures of the parts of the character not right, not writing in the correct strokes, copying down the wrong things on the assignment books, missing a stroke here and there.

Lai told, other than being the fine motor movements of the hands not being agile enough, not having enough spatial awareness, the handwriting is also, related to, many things including concentration, hand-eye coordination, the feedback of both side of the child’s body.

There are the games that can help children to hone up their fine motor skills.  Lai and Yu both suggested, for instance, crumpling sheets to make art, sticking the stickers on, modeling with the bricks, pinch balls, all of these can steady the shoulders, the elbows, the wrists, to train the muscles’ strengths, the ability to grasp.  And, mirroring the blocks, can help conceptualize spatial abilities, the simple act of sticking the stickers onto a sheet can train the hand-eye coordination, and the order of the child’s muscle movements.

Yu suggested, that when your children have troubles writing, don’t ask them to practice the writing skills repeatedly, first, observe, and think, that way, you can, help your young child, slowly, build up their self-confidences, and hone up on their writing skills.

And so, this, is on how we often, missed out on the symptoms, we just see, the end results, like for a child who acts up in class, we automatically believe, that it’s because they’re, bad, instead of, thinking, that maybe, the materials is too easy for her/him, that’s why s/he becomes, disruptive, or that maybe, the child can’t understand, that’s why, s/he is, acting up in class, or, for some other reasons, the kid just need, the one-on-one attention that s/he may not be having enough of at home from the teachers, because, we only see the problems, NOT what is lying, behind, these, “problematic behaviors”.
