The general funeral for the City within the City Fire in Kaohsiung of the forty-six locals who’d died was held yesterday, and, these forty-six victims of the fire were mostly of the elderly population, and they’d died, on the day of the holiday to celebrate old age, it’d shown, how the problems of living is an issue of grave concern, especially for the elderly who live alone.
The building where the fire happened was only forty-years-old, the structures were, up-to-date, but, there were, so many elders living there, and, a lot of the comments from all around said that this is a problem that needed to get resolved with the urbanization process of the city, I believe, that this is, the wrong way of approach, so long as the government allotted some amount that it placed on the younger generation’s social housing complexes to turn it into the funds for the elderly resident local complexes, then, it could give a safe stay for the elderly who can still take care of themselves, to not need to live in a place, without the supervisors managing the building like the City within the City Apartment Complex.
There are only a handful of government set up elderly assisted living homes like the Jen-Ai Home or some privately owned and operated retirement villages, those elders, to move into the government funded homes that is usually cheaper, couldn’t, because of the capacity limits of the number of residents allowed in, and, the private, larger retirement villages are normally, too high in costs, and so, from the City-within-a-City apartment complex of Kaohsiung, we can see this dire need for the elderly residential needs.
I think, that the government can spare 20,000 social housing of the 200,000 social housing into the elderly apartments, and, the constructions of these can be a collaboration of the private sector and the government assisted, while, the rents for the place, the government can ask the elderly who originally lived elsewhere, to let up their original homes for rent, and use the rent received from their original homes, to help pay for their stay in the apartment complexes for the elderly, that way, there wouldn’t be an issue with the funding, and it’d, guaranteed the elders to have some money from the rents of their, original homes, and it can give more choices or those who are seeking out residences, and this will surely, help with the lowering of the rents in the future.
The elderly apartment complexes is going to be planned out differently than the current residential apartments, and, switching homes, is definitely, not the best choice for all, but, toward the aging community, the government needs to shoulder up the responsibilities for caring for the elderly’s needs of a safe place to live in, and so, I would advise the use of private and public working together, the housing trust systems, to resolve the matter. With the two systems working, the government can encourage the people to set up the new sort of sales agents or for the nonprofit organizations to help resolve the crises of elderly residential needs, and, set up the housing trusts, and rent the residences out, to make the money needed, and, this can solve the needs of the citizens’ finding a home, and can create more employment opportunities.
There’s no need for a huge area for the building of these elderly residents, and so, the lots that’s owned by the city government that won’t need to get sold off can be the sites, and it can help the locals or groups who are looking for the new business ventures have the opportunities to find business, and, add a new life into the residential building markets. I hope, that as the government start pushing forth the social apartments, they can also, pay more attention to the elderly apartments, after all, the elderly apartment residential buildings are, an important part of the social complexes too.
It would need to be affordable these elderly social living complexes, and so, as the government partnered up with the private sector to building these social housing projects, other than providing the land, it also needed to utilize the rents of these lands, that way, the costs of building for the builders can be, lowered, and, in the future, there would be would be the lower costs of elderly social housing complexes to use.
And so, this is all ideal still, I mean, the housing costs are higher here by the year, and, it would be ideal, if this is doable, but, it isn’t, the economic isn’t rising up yet, and, a lot of people are, out of jobs, and, they’re, looking for that stay too, just as these elderly, and, it’s not affordable one bit, but, there are some ideas that can be taken from this view, and the fires did, burn out the dire needs of the elderly population, needing that safer stay that’s for certain!
