The elementary school teacher, Hong from Shichuang Elementary of Penghu used magic, and board games, to help turn math into something interesting for his students.  He’d already received numerous awards for teaching, and is into his eighteenth year as a teacher, he’d made the lesson plans for math such as the “Star teaching methods” for math, received numerous teaching awards, in recent years he’d set up “Yi’s Prague Square” FB fans page, and on every Tuesday and Friday of every week, he’d shared the fun math instruction articles.  He continued holding his passions in teaching the math subject.

Being born away from the main island, as Hong first entered into teaching, he’d known about the lacking of resources in the distant schools, especially in math, which most students found to be boring, and the students normally started giving up on math during their middle grade years of elementary, and losing their passions for math completely when they get to the higher grades.  Hong told, that to get the students excited about learning math, there’s a need for that key of fun, and, the board games, and magic became, that key, adding some fun to the math subject which is considered boring by most.

Hong had been intrigued by magic, and props since he was a child, starting in university he’d started researching how to do the magic tricks by reading the books on it, during his term as an intern instructor, the prime of his day was when he got to do the tricks for the students.  He’d examined the principles of math using magic and board games, found, that there are, tons of resources to teaching, and, created, a ton of innovative math lesson plans.

Hong made the example of the times table, the multiplications of nine, using a simple magic trick, he’d made the students interested.  First he had a child think of a number from one to nine, multiple the number by nine, then, adding it to the number before, and after, also equals the multiples of nine, then, this series of numbers must be, multiples of nine too, this intrigued his students, made them interested, surprised, which made them more into learning math.

The Children with a Lowered Self-Esteem, Found the Fun in Math Through Play

He observed that how the kids who don’t do that well in the academics, because of magic or the board games, found their own senses of, achievement, which motivated them to learn more.  And, he’d planned out the end-of-semester magic trick show for the class, to let the kids find their own stages to perform on.

To this very day, Hong still carried his passions for teaching math.  He’d told, that combining the math subject with his favorites, magic and board games, that was what motivated him to keep on teaching the subject of mathematics.

So, passion is key, and, making learning fun for the students, that’s, another key in this, this man used innovative measures, to help his students turn an original boring subject, and let’s face it, math can be totally, BORING, into something that intrigued them, something that makes them to find out more, so the kids became, the initiators of their own, learning processes, which makes the kids more eager to learn from him, and this instructor poured everything into his teaching plans, to make learning math interesting for his students.
