The lacking in the system of care, so abuse in these facilities keeps on, happening, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…
The tragedy of a twenty-eight-year-old autistic resident of the Der-Fang private institution in Miaoli getting beaten to death, this case showed, that the lacking in social safety, can easily make those who couldn’t care for themselves fall into, crises and dangerous situations. Especially with the handicapped individuals aging processes, with the declined ability to fend for themselves more, there’s the needs of individualized care plans. The group homes only provided for the group care, and the homes are responsible for provisions of care in the medical fronts. To fulfill the needs of caretaking above, there would be need for more trained professionals, more resources too.
And yet, in practicality, there’s that high turnover rate of workers in these facilities, the work of caretaking, and the divisions of tasks, it’s all the challenges and management skills of the facilities must face, if help isn’t given immediately, then, cases of neglect, even abuse would happen more frequently. The county government already sent out the ceasing operations order to Der-Fang Home, moving the other residents to other facilities. But, does that resolve the problems? How do we prevent similar tragedies in the future, that, is the core focus of the management.
Toward those who are handicapped mentally and/or physically who have difficulties expressing their needs, the caretakers need to find fitting modes of communication based off of individual differences, while how the residents’ families can get a hold of how their families are being cared for, there are no sure means to do this, and it’s, hard to accomplish in the practical sense. If we can add in a third party with a mutual angle, to help report the conditions of the residents lives other than raising up the standards of care, helping to protect the rights of the residents, it can also, prevent instants of abuse as well.
And yet, because the public aren’t aware enough over the rules of the rights of the handicapped individuals, with limited knowledge of the around-the-clock care homes, the residential facilities, to the point that our beliefs were what it was from a long time ago. To achieve the higher standards of caretaking in these facilities, the private and the public must work together.
And so, this case brought out the lacking in the system of care provided to these individuals with special needs, and, this is an important issues, because, maybe it does not affect your loved ones immediately, but, I bet, there’s someone you know, who require this sort of an institutionalization, who may be a resident in one of these, facilities, and if these facilities aren’t up to standards in their operations, then, more tragedies like this one will only keep on occurring, repeatedly.
