An heirloom jewelry passed down from your mother to you, and now, to your own, children and, hopefully, they will, pass it down, to their own, young too! Translated…
My mother was born before 1911, lived as the citizen of the Ching Dynasty for eleven years. Her maternal grandfather was an officer of the court, she’s considered second generation of noble backgrounds, well off, born and raised in a rich family, wore clothes made from the best materials, her hair pins, are made of, a ton of, jewelry. She’s, a total, beauty in modern day meanings.
When I was younger, my mother would hand the spare pieces of jewelries to me to play with as toys, I’d, collected them all up, inside a small box. Later, my father died young, and my mother wasn’t well in financial planning, had to, sell off her favorite pieces of jewelries one by one.
After my mother passed, I’d found that box with the jewelries, took it to show my friend who owned a jewelry shop, to see what her smiths can make, from these, scattered, pieces.
And the master jeweler surely was, handy, he’d, made a split piece of jade into the shape of a rabbit, then, made the two tiny pieces of jades into, a pair, of, earrings, and, the tiny pearls, into the ring and earrings, and, made a basket shaped brooch from the small pieces of agate, jade, ivory, and pearl, and other precious stones.
As my daughter was married, I’d, given her the jade rabbit and the necklace to her for keepsake; when my son was wed, I’d, given the jade ring, jade earring, to my, daughter-in-law.
This, I suppose, is, a passing of, heritage then.
And so, this, is on, passing the love, the thoughtfulness of your mother to you, down to your own young, and the pieces of jewelries are, more than what they are made of, they’re, with the depth of care and concerns that were, passed down from one generation to the next, an heirloom.
