I Know You’re, Scared

Helping this, young child cope with her fears of having done, something wrong, how it might, prevent the suicides in teenagers, more effectively, translated…

My young granddaughter, Hsieh-Hsieh came to visit for the weekend, she took out the acrylic puzzle apple made by her aunt out of the cabinet.  The puzzle isn’t easy to manage, I’d told her to leave her aunt’s things, alone, to put it back immediately.  And, before I could react, WHACK!  The apple dropped to the floors, and, broke into so many, pieces.  Hsieh-Hsieh was thrilled, rushed into her room to duck and hide, my youngest quickly went to pick up the pieces, and I can only tell Hsieh-Hsieh with a peaceful tone of voice, “It’s okay, we’ll, just tell aunty, and apologize to her.”

And yet, the normally, well-behaved, did what she was told Hsieh-Hsieh froze, with her eyes, filled up with tears, refuse to, apologize, no matter what.

I’d, walked over to her, pulled her into my arms, originally, wanted to, give her a scolding, and yet, I’d, felt, her fears.  I faced her, with her tiny hand in mine, asked, “you’re, afraid, aren’t you?”  at this time, the tears she’d been holding back, came breaking, out, she’d nodded.  I’d told her in a gentle tone of voice, “grandma knows you’re afraid, grandma will go with you, to apologize to aunty, is that all right?”, at first, she’d, refused to budge an inch, then, moved toward my youngest daughter, said, in a, timid voice, “Aunty, I’m, sorry, I didn’t, mean…to………”

And this reminded me of the specialist report on the UDN newspapers, “Generation Depressed: Why do Teens Commit Suicide”, I think, a lot of times, the children aren’t unwilling to deal, it’s just, that they didn’t know, how to, deal with the fears that they feel within them.  And, as adults, try to empathize the children’s, fears, to let them feel, that, we’re, on their, sides, and things will, look up I’m sure of it.

And so, this, is the understanding of this grandmother, from watching her young granddaughter get freaked out about breaking her aunt’s puzzles, and, if all the adults can be calm and collected in situations like this, when a child felt that s/he did something wrong, I’m sure, that the rates of adolescent suicide will certainly, drop, sharply too.
