Getting Students to Improve on Their Reading Comprehension Skills, Start Them Up with Interesting Articles

The ways we have, of getting these, children of the TECHNOLOGY age to READ more!!!  Off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

A lot of children aren’t used to reading the long winding articles, and for some, the more they read, the harder it was for them to understand what they’re reading.  And, toward the test questions that focus on reading comprehension, this reading for understanding simply can’t be, ignored.

The reading counselor of the middle school Chinese from the Education Department of the city of Taichung shares a few tips on how to get the students interested in reading, the following is an interview…

skills you will acquire, in reading FOR, comprehension…diagram found online

Q: I know reading comprehension is important, but my child just doesn’t like reading those long winding essays, what do I do?  Why is it that my child reads a whole lot, but her/his grades still didn’t improve?

If there’s this lack of interest in reading, and the student is in her/his teenage years in the middle or high school levels, my recommendation is to take away the cell phones, and stuff the student’s hands with large volumes of books, to FORCE the individual to rad, why not find something that can spark her/his interest, like the odd stories, at least, get her/him to peak her/his interest in reading on the subjects, then build up the reading hobbies from there.

To get the children’s attention to rad, I will wrap the information I want to transfer to my students in what they’re interested in.  For instance I’d shared with them, “the third time the murderous orca from the sea parks, Conley”, “is the genetically edited babies found in China real or fake?”, and other highly discussed international news, with the sound bytes, the video files, to capture my students’ attention, then, I’d helped them learn to dissect what they’re reading, to find the key points of the articles.

If the child is completely uninterested in reading materials outside of class, at least, get them to read through the three years of middle school Chinese courses texts thoroughly, learned to understanding, the structures of each and every passage.  And at testing time, all the questions are like an essay they’d read in class, so long as you have the basic reading skills, you will be able to comprehend what you’re reading, and answer the questions correctly.

establishing the good habit…photo from online

I’d often bumped into another group of children, they loved reading, but they only read one genre of books.  The volume of reading does NOT corresponds to having good reading comprehension skills, a lot of the middle school students loved the romances, the science fictions, but failed to pay attention to the descriptive articles that focuses on development of their logical abilities, for instance, the encyclopedias with only the facts, or the in-depth news reports.

Comparing to the novels with the ups and downs in the plots, they’re seemingly boring, but had clear cut structures, the descriptive essays will help the students hone up on their reading comprehension skills.

And so, the important thing is not just how you read, but WHAT you read too, as there are a ton of graphic novels available for young adults’ hands, and, that, is what this next generation of children are into, because it’s way easier, to see a picture, a drawing, or watch that video, than to read about how something is done a certain way, and besides, reading is a higher function process, it requires the Wernicke’s area, the visual cortexes, the medial temporal lobes and other parts of the brains (i.e. prefrontal cortex???) to get activated, so reading IS an activity that’ll, make the brains come to life, don’t believe me, go into a brain lab, and hook those electrodes on, and read something, and see parts of your brains, firing off!

so this would be, the likely, result…

Reading is a REALLY important skill, and we should NOT lose it, comprehending what you read is important too, but you must, first, DEVELOP that habit, that love of reading first.
