He Became Paralyzed After a Car Accident, Learned to Use the Computer Programs, & Now He is a Computer Teacher for Others

Overcoming the obstacle in his life, and became, someone who inspires, and teaches, truly inspirational here, off of the Newspapers, translated…

Guo-Tsai Chen who taught computer graphics at the “Chenggong Home” for the Spinal Injury Association in Kaohsiung was originally a member of a drifting fishing boat crew who’d made tons of money, but over a decade ago, his marriage hit the rocks, and he’d become, depressed, in a car accident, he’d become quadriplegic and paralyzed.  His life got turned upside down, and once, he’d found, that his mother, in caring for him, her hair had turned all white, felt that he was ill-fitting as a son, and started turning over a new leaf.  He’d learned the skills of computer graphics, gotten certified as a computer graphics designer, proved to others, that heaven won’t give you more than you can, handle.

At age forty-three, he now runs a computer studio, becoming handicapped, it’d made me tougher, when the clients threw him a computer file, he could offer them a series of services from computer graphics design to editing for them, and gotten the commends of his, clientele, he’d gotten a ton of, long-term contracts because of this.

Before the car crash, Chen was originally a fisher on a ship, and followed the crew abroad, gained a ton of worldly experiences; but because of his never being at home, about a decade ago, his marriage was, ripped.  As he felt really upset, he drove out on his car, to relieve his stress, and crashed, injured his fourth and sixth cervical spinal cords.  Back then he’d thought it was only fractures, and seeing how young he was then, he’d believed, that after the physical therapies, he’d be, good as before, but things didn’t go his way, he’d gone to all the major hospitals all around to rehabilitate, and, each and every time, his hope of making that full recovery, fell through, he’d almost, wanted to, give up.

Once as his mother was changing him, he saw his mother’s hair turned all white, and suddenly felt that he was, improper as a son, and that he couldn’t be a burden to his own families anymore.  He’d set back out again, asked his mother to get him a computer, and, “walked out” of his house in his wheelchair, to the Chenggong Home that offered the rehabilitation services for patients who’d, suffered spinal injuries, to pick up a viable skill, and he’d logged onto the internet to hone up on what he’d learned, and even though it took him three whole hours to key five-hundred characters.  He’d not, stopped learning.

In the process of his self-learning, he’d often gone to the bookstores to thumb through the tool books to further his skills, and he was able to, get certified as a professional computer programmer in the end.

With the help from his friend, Chen started from making the business cards, and now, he owns his own workshop, and all the way to where he is now, he’s, more than thankful, for his families, for not giving up on him.

Noted as Brother Tsai by the pupils who are handicapped, Chen passed through the valleys of his own life, not only does his transfer the professional knowledge of his computer skills, he’d also, passed along the life experiences to others.

“Press here, and you can paste the picture over there!”, being handicapped, and paralyzed, he’d used that specialized mouse, to teach the pupils the computer drawing skills.  In his directions, the pupils from the “Chenggong Home”, two to three of them can already, live off of their own sets of skills, taking the cases solo.

Chen told, that his biggest wish is to share his life’s experience with other handicapped persons, to help them get out of the lows of their separate lives.

Chen’s spinal injuries was higher up in the neck regions, and after he became handicapped, he’d asked, “why me?”, he’d once blamed the circumstances of his own life, but, he’d overcome his own physical handicaps, worked hard learning daily, and now, not only is he able to make a living on his own, he’d, returned back to the “Chenggong Home” to teach other handicapped pupils.  He’d told them, don’t feel bad if you don’t have a sense of the aesthetics, if you don’t have the talents, “if you’d given up on yourselves, then, nobody will be able to help you!”

Helping the pupils grow, Chen used that empathy, hoping to use his own experiences, as a model for others, to help more handicapped persons to feel brave to pursue their own dreams, to NOT settle down to become, a handicap person.

He said, the students had varied extent of injuries, some were worse than he was, and it was even harder to teach them the skills, he’d needed to help the pupils overcome their physical handicaps, as well as that mental block that they may have, then, help them overcome the technicality of the skills they are learning.  But, the biggest enemies of the handicapped person, it’s not anyone outside, but oneself, so long as you’re able to break through the bounds of your own minds, not giving up on yourselves, you will, see the hopes in your lives as well.

And so, this still showed, that it’s NOT how hard you fall, it’s how you work harder, to get BACK up from that huge fall, like this man’s proven, he was down and out, then, the wakeup call came, seeing his mother’s hair all white, and that was enough, to motivate him, to GET back up, and, he is passing what he’d learned, the attitude to getting back UP when knocked down, as well as the skills he’d learned, to those who are in a similar predicament as he.
