Extending that Warm Hand Toward the “Cold Fronts”

Kindness shown, toward the homeless population in the community, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

The temperatures dropped lower and lower these past few days, even as we wrapped ourselves up tightly, we could still feel the icy cold wind, coming in, from the spaces in our, sweaters, as I finished running all my errands, I just, want to go home, and go and hide underneath my warm covers.

Two years ago, on an evening, close to this time of year, I’d passed through the February 28th Memorial Park, and saw a group of homeless people gathering at the gazebo, I got curious, and walked over to see what was going on!  An older woman welcomed me in, “Come in, have some ginger yam soup!”  I’d smiled, stumped outside the gazebo, not knowing how to reply.  At this time, the woman suddenly understood, apologized, “oh, I’m sorry, I thought you were a homeless person I knew!”  perhaps, it’s how casually I’d dressed, that I looked like, a homeless person, a mistake, but, any of us might become, homeless, as there’s, that, possibility.  And because of this, I’d, selected to let this “mistake”, turn itself into, a beautiful connection.  I’d asked the woman, what made her prepared these ginger yam soups for the homeless?  She’d told me, that her son has a rare condition, getting treated at N.T.U. Hospital, and she’d needed to take him to the treatments quite often.  One winter evening, being annoyed, she’d, gone to the parks to stroll alone, she’d found these homeless people, shivering and quivering in the cold, it’d dawned on her, that other than the illnesses, not having enough food to eat, not dressing up warmly enough, is also, quite, scary too.

offering the foods that warmed up the bodies, AND the, hearts too!

Not well-to-do, she’d decided, to do something FOR these individuals, who’d had hard times fall on their lives, after considerations, she’d decided, that when the weather gets cold, she shall, make the ginger yam soups for them.  Seeing how those homeless people, with the bowls of warmed ginger yam soups, having conversation with the woman like she were their kin, it seemed that she’d not only, warmed up their stomachs, but their hearts also.  I’d commended her on how merciful she was, she’d said she wasn’t, told me that as she’d heard the homeless told the stories of their lives, she’d felt what she’d experienced, was NOTHING compared to them.

It was, a magical, night!  It seemed, that I spotted, that deity in her physical form that evening, and these acts of kindness is, infectious too.  Last winter, because of that woman’s influences on me, not being well off like she, I’d also, bought some socks, some heating packs, headed to the areas close to the Memorial Park, and asked the homeless if they are in need of the items (instead of FORCING them to take it)?  It’s hard to imagine!  That these members of the homeless community were using that thin makeshift raincoat like a coat to fight off the cold weathers; the weather’s this cold, and I saw a woman using the cold water of the public bathrooms to wash her own hair.

At the end of 2020, there’s not just the strong cold fronts, but also, the mutated version of MERS-CoV too, and, what we face at the start of 2021, is two months’ lockdown of this country’s borders.  In 2020, a lot of us lost our jobs, more had earned a lot of money from the stocks.  Our warm hands, and the charitable foundations, can help bring the gaps closer, to help this society reach that balance, and I hope, that what’s locked in, would be just the virus, not the heart of helping one another out!

And so, this is, a sort of, a domino effect, with the outbreaks of MERS-CoV, the global economy is dipping down, and, there are, a lot more homeless people living on the streets, for whatever their reasons may be, and, this group of individuals, started showing that kindness toward those in the homeless population, by passing out the coats, the covers, some warm soup, to help warm the bodies, as well, as the hearts, and giving new hope to a, brand new year!
