The Family of Four Committed Suicide, the Mayor of Kaohsiung: We Will Reinforce the System of Reporting Emergencies

This is still, HINDSIGHT here, what’s already happened, you can’t, alter than!  The tragedy, from the long-term care department, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

Two days ago in the city of Kaohsiung there was a tragic suicide of four deaths, with the couple, the Chiens, taking their two physically handicapped daughters to commit suicide, the district attorney ruled out external factors of their deaths, all four died from carbon monoxide poisoning, but to tell if the children were first knocked out by the parents, then poisoned with gas by their parents, the district attorneys took samples of the children’s tears, and blood to test; the mayor of Kaohsiung, Chen stated, that some of the cases should be listed as high-risk report families, and that there should be a tighter connection with this system of reporting with the local communities, and the members of the community should get to know each other, to know if there’s help needed.

The family, was listed as low-income help recipients, the children were moderately and several physically and/or mentally handicapped, with the support checks, and taken care of by their parents.  The head of the long-term care unit of Kaohsiung’s Department of Sanitations, Lee stated, that Chien’s wife, Hsu was diagnosed with cancer, they’d filed for the help care assistance and had qualified, but this mother kept believing that it’s her responsibility to look after her own young herself, and not used the services provided by the local government, and not filed for the temporary daycare programs for her two children.

Lee told, that the long-term care program provisions has a “breather program”, if there are elders sixty-five and older or handicapped family members, then, the family would qualify, after the assessments of the center, if the families are ranked between level two and eight, then, the families can apply for the “breather programs”, and the long-term care center will send the workers to help the families with the caretaking needs, so the primary caretaker can have a break.

Lee said, that unfortunately, however, a lot of the sole care providers, because of their senses of responsibility, they’d not wanted to have any outside help, and even though they may know about this “breather program”, they don’t use it, it’s, such a waste of social resources provided by the government.

And so, this is still another case (not the last of a dying breed, I’m afraid!), of how a primary sole caretaker got too stressed out, and committed suicide with the loved ones, and this could’ve been prevented, had the local communities showed a little more care and concern, if the neighbors can, watch out for each other more, but this is not the way the world works, and so, this tragedy still wasn’t, avoided.
