The Man Took Care of His Wife for Thirty Years on End, Suspected of Smothering His Wife Who’d Had a Stroke to Death, the District Attorney Begged the Judge for Mercy for Him

The elderly man, Tsai’s wife had a stroke and became bedridden for thirty years on end, a short while ago, she had a fever and was taken to the hospital, and, Tsai, due to the fatigue, and the trials of taking care of his wife long-term, he couldn’t take it anymore, lost it, and, was suspected of smothering his own wife to death in the hospital room, the Taipei D.A.’s Office considered that Tsai hadn’t slept at all, looking after his wife, that he didn’t want his wife to continue suffering, that was what drove him to murder her, that it’s under understandable conditions, yesterday charged him with murder from domestic violence, recommended to the courts to be lenient on the elderly man.

The police and district attorney investigated and found, that the wife of the sixty-seven-year-old Tsai had seven strokes, is immobilized, was long-term bedridden, in a wheelchair, that for thirty years on end, she was looked after by Tsai and the hired nurse, while their son worked to make the money.  Tsai’s wife was hospitalized due to urinary tract infection, and a fever, and, the hired nurse’s aide fell ill and was absent too, during the time of his wife’s hospital stay, he’d shouldered the sole responsibilities of looking after her, he couldn’t sleep well, became too tired.

On the evening of September 5^th of this year, Tsai heard his wife crying loud, he’d gone to check on her, found that the needle for the drip had fallen out, and blood was coming out of the back of her hand, he could no longer watch his wife suffer so much from her conditions long term, he’d pinched his wife’s nose first, then, used the plastic bag of the tissues to stuff into her mouth, until he’d regained his senses, then he let go.

As Tsai found that his wife’s vitals were weakened, he’d rushed over to the nurse’s station, told the staff on duty, “My wife is finally free, she’s finally, free!”, the nursing staff rushed in, and paged the doctors for the emergency resuscitation measures, five days later, the woman died, the D.A. examined the body, and found the cause of death being anoxia causing brain damage.

During the interrogations, Tsai admitted to what he’d done, claimed that he saw his wife moaned and groaned in pain, that he couldn’t bear to watch her being in pain, that was what drove him to murder her, the district attorney considered the motives of Tsai’s crime, and how he had admitted to what his done truthfully, and carried a good attitude, suggested the courts to give him a lighter sentence.

And so, despite the programs of assistance in long-term care, this still keeps on happening, because the burdens of the primary caretaker grew greater by the day, and watching that someone you love and care about a whole lot suffer just makes you break, that’s what drove you to commit murder, out of mercy, because you don’t want that person you love to suffer any longer.
