A Child with Crouzon Syndrome Used His Art to Express the Love He Has for the World, Won the Awards

What this kid had to, overcome, to pursue his love of artistic creation, it’s simply, inspirational I tell ya!  Off of the Newspapers, translated…

The thirteen-year-old Yo-Jia Chen had been diagnosed with Crouzon Syndrome since he was five-months old, went through tracheotomy, and multiple surgeries when he was in his infancy years, but he’d never cried once when he’d gone under the knife, he’d even drawn many pictures of trains, out of love for them, and this time, his work “Trains without the Virus” won an award in the Hsinbei’s 23rd Artwork on Tour by the Physically & Mentally Handicapped.  On the awards ceremonies yesterday, he who wasn’t at all articulate, stated, “I’m very pleased!”

The Cruzon Syndrome is a dominant inherited disorder, with the diagnosed having malformed skulls, with bulging eyes, since Chen was born, he’d gone in and out of the hospitals multiple times per year, faced many surgeries big and small, but he’d always been, brave about it.

At birth, his brains were compressed, had difficulties breathing, at age five, he received a tracheotomy, and had scoliosis, with the tracheotomy, and his upper and lower jaw not matching together, he couldn’t chew normally, even his skull, was made from the titanium from the 3D printers, the families said, “he was raised by the hospital, he’s so very brave”.

Chen who loved trains once begged his families to bring him to the Do-Liang Station to watch the trains, to Changwha to see the fan-shaped garages where the trains were parked in, he could tell the type of trains from the sound of the wheels hitting the railroads, he’d loved even more, using his color pencils, markers, and drawn out the trains, this time with the theme of MERS-CoV, he made a painting of the trains carrying the patients asking for help, to get the trains into the sanitizing stations.

Chen’s aunt said, Chen’s joints were affected by his condition, his palms don’t have enough strength, it’d made it even harder to draw, he’d needed to rest up after he started drawing for a bit, but it’d not, changed his love for it.  With the imaginations to create, and so, she’d, provided him with endless amount of drawing papers so he could, create the art as he wished.

And so, this young boy, despite his condition, still worked hard, pursued his interest, and it’s his spirits of going after what he wanted to do in life, what made him happy, that we can all, take from.
