The Resident of a Mental Hospital Burned His Own Restraints, the Yilan Veteran Memorial Hospital was on Fire Yesterday

A Mental Patient Pulled Out a Lighter in the Restraint Room, Caused a Fire, and the Hospital Took Responsibilities for the Neglect

A man in the midnight hours of yesterday went to the psych ward of the Taipei V.M.H.’s Yuanshan Branch in Yilan to get treated, he’d lost it, and was restrained then taken into the room to get separated from the general population, but yesterday morn, he took out a lighter in the room, burned the suspenders the staff used to restrain him, then the quilt, causing the fire; the hospital immediately evacuated the fifty-eight residential patients, and started the sprinkler systems, and thankfully the fire was put out before anybody was severely injured, and the district attorney and the police is currently investigating if the man’s behavior was related to public endangerment.

Based off of the hospitalization standardized operating procedures, all who are admitted needed to get their bodies scanned for anything dangerous, and the hospital admitted to being negligent; the director, Cheng demanded a review for the procedures, to make sure that the admitted patients be checked more thoroughly.

Based off of investigation, the twenty-nine-year-old male entered into the E.R. accompanied by his classmate; after the psychiatrists evaluated him, they gave him a shot, then, tied the suspending bands around his limbs and across his chest, and sent him to the protective unit to be separated from the population, and assigned the nurses to take his vitals, and to help calm him down regularly.

Based off of the surveillance footage, at around nine in the morn, the man became awake, and tried to break free from the restraints, and there wasn’t any nursing staff present, he’d pulled out a lighter from his right pocket, attempted to burn off the suspending ropes, but wasn’t successful, then he’d, started, burning down the quilt.

The smokes triggered the fire alarms, the hospital sent out the fire safety crew, the paramedics evacuated fifty-eight residents outside to the vacant lot, another group of workers used four fire extinguishers to put out the blazes.

By the time the firefighters arrived ten minutes later, the fire had been put out, nobody was injured, partial of the walls of the room had been smoked to black; at around ten, everybody was found to be unharmed, and sent back into her/his separate rooms.

Cheng said, that the workers on scene yesterday were quick to respond, that was how they were able to reduce the damages to a minimum; the police stated, that this fire was started by someone with a mental condition, and they will look into the matter more, to determine, if his actions were, criminal.

This is lucky, because NOBODY died, and if someone had died in this fire that this man started, then, not only the hospital will be sued for neglect, but the man would’ve gotten sued for MURDER, or manslaughter at least, and this is why the mental institutions should ALWAYS check those who are admitted into the facilities for anything that can possibly cause harm or are dangerous to the individual and others the moment the people are, being, admitted in for treatment purposes.
