Something that’s, TOO important to overlook in this day and age, the parents NEED to LEAD by E-X-A-M-P-L-E here, off of the Front Page Sections, translated…

Technologies are, changing our lives, the children now grow up, under the flash and noises of the glow of those screens, with absolutely ZERO patience to sit still and read a book, and so, how can parents help instill that love of reading in their own young?  The experts pointed out, that getting the children to enjoy reading books, helping them establish reading as a hobby is key, selecting the materials that are fitting for children to read, set up a time, a place to read to them.  And, the parents can offer physical incentives for children to read, to help the children in this high-tech era gain more patience in reading.

The teaching center research assistant who had been involved in the developing of the new Chinese classes curricula, Tsai stated, that her daughter who just entered into the third grade preferred reading with the pictures, and to help her daughter have patience and read, she’d given her a physical incentive, if she finished a book, then, she’d given her a hundred dollar extra for her allowances.

At the same time, to make sure that her daughter didn’t become picky in reading, Tsai divided up the classifications of her daughter’s reading materials into general sciences, literature, and others, and selected the books that fitted to her daughter’s reading interest; as her daughter turned one, she’d read along those books made of clothes, that isn’t easily torn up, and afterwards, she’d selected the paper-paged illustrated books for her, until she entered into the elementary school years.

“Understanding what the book is about” is a key to help children develop an interest in reading, Tsai told, that as parents make the book selections, first, they need to select books fitted to the child’s level of development.  If the children can’t read the Chinese characters yet, then, find books with the phonetic spellings, for them to start reading.

Children’s learning the phonetic spellings is a milestone to their learning processes, and the parents’ job is to help the children become more autonomous readers.  After Tsai and her daughter read together, she’d discussed what they just read, but not pressuring her daughter to answer, and the parents can extend the discussions more, to guide the children to describe in more detail what they’d read.  The discussions of reading materials between parents and children are NOT exams, don’t ask your child to tell you which characters are in the books they’d read, or how the storyline ran along.

The professor of Internet Technology Learning graduate school, Chen pointed out, if the parents want to help turn reading into a habit, then, set up a specific time, a specific place for the children to read in is quite vital.  If the child can’t sit still, then, start them off on five-minutes, and, increase slowly to ten, and so on, if the parents are too forceful in getting the children to read, it would, drive the children farther away from books.

Chen also said, that the parents need to lead by example and not just words, as the parents loved to read themselves, set up a good role model for the children, the children will naturally model after the behaviors.  There are the parent-teacher conferences in the schools, he suggested that the parents set up a network online, and share the volume of their own children’s reading, to guide children to read more, to read along with the children, and this also increases the connection between parents and their young too.

and this, is how to get it…

starting them young! Photo from online

Because this IS the high-tech era, it’s hard getting the younger generations to crack open that book, especially when they were too young, you’d started them off, on the iPads, the SmartPhones, and after they’re used to the flashes of the screen, it would be quite difficult, to turn them back into the paperbacks, so, it’s best, that as parents, YOU (still NOT one of you!) crack open a book more, sit down with your children, and have a reading session, and you don’t even have to read the same thing, just sit, and crack open the books, to help them get into the habits of reading more.
