The Traffic Jam in Language Therapy, the Early Intervention Turned into, Slow Intervention

The LACKING of the provisions of these early intervention programs set up by the government here, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

Based off of the statistical measurements conducted by the Department of Welfare Sanitations, up until last year, there were, a total of 993 certified language therapists, and, for every 100,000 citizens, there were, only 4.2 language therapists available to give the help to those who needed, and, the young children who wanted to seek out these early intervention programs, usually became, “delayed intervention”, there’s, this, traffic jam of those children in need in the hospital all around the nation right now.  In order to help the new students to get the help they needed, the pupils who’d been in the programs for six months, automatically, gets kicked from the systems became the hidden rule of thumb.

There is, an estimated of a little over 20,000 children who were reported as developmentally delayed per year, and after the assessment processes, about sixty-percent of these children are in need of early intervention, and most of the children needed the language therapies.  But, there aren’t, enough trained, certified language therapists, there are, the most who had been registered as certified language therapists in Taichung, the city of Hsinbei came in second; in Chiayi and Taidong there were, the least number of trained and certified language therapists, with Keelung coming in at a close second, with only nine certified trainers.

The secretary of the Taipei Language Therapist Union, Wang told, that compared to other cities and counties, the city of Taipei has enough resources, but, the market for the services, is, so jammed up, the therapists are having a hard enough time, assisting the children in their areas, and there are, children from other counties and cities seeking out the help, and even if each therapist can help fourteen children a day, there are still, a greater number of children who needed the helps, but aren’t getting them; most of the hospitals only provided the early intervention programs for no more than six months, so the new children in need can receive the help they need, and yet, this had, caused the parents, to stand in line everywhere, and, if the families are, unlucky and didn’t get in, then, they’re, basically, excluded, from the market of language therapies.

The MacKay Memorial Hospital’s primary physician in the ENT department, Lin said, as the children go through the evaluations for developmentally delayed, about half by rough estimate, needed the language therapies, but, there are, different sets of resources, assigned to the varied types of handicaps in young children, and the hospital didn’t classify them properly, and just, squeezed them all in, this is, a reason why there’s, this “traffic jam” in the systems; plus, the hospitals don’t focus on the language therapies, and, there aren’t, that many slots available, and even as there are, up to 200 children who “graduated” out of these programs by the year, they are still, ill-equipped, for the world outside.

The department manager, Wu of Department of Sanitation & Welfares stated, that in the past, before the job title of language therapist was available, the special education instructors were put in charge, in teaching these children, and currently, the system of education should work alongside the system of welfare and sanitations, hoping, to alleviate this problem.

There’s, this, dire need, and yet, there’s, a shortage of the help being, provided, and, as parents with children who are, developmentally delayed, they can only pray, that their children get into the programs, and by the time they got pushed out, they’ll, at least, be at the level of children their age, and this is due to the government’s not paying enough attention to how there’s, a dire need for these sorts of services, and the government didn’t provide related training programs so more of the certified language therapists can get onboard the program.
