This is precisely W-H-Y, demented elderly should, NEVER, be left alone!  From the Front Page Sections, translated…

A resident in Yangmei, Taoyuan was on fire two evenings ago, the homeowner was a woman, Lin, who’d been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, she was suspected of having the beams, and other items fallen on top of her, causing her to die in the house fire, the reason of how the fire started, was because of not watching the stove when she was cooking.  Toward how certain types of demented elderly people’s inability to escape when fires occur, the United New International Hospital’s neurologist, Dr. Lee reminded, that we shouldn’t leave the demented elderly stay home alone on their own, that way, these sorts of tragedies might be, prevented.

The city fire department’s second squad’s Yangmei substation, two evenings ago, received a call around 7:30 in the evening, said that there was a fire in a residence in Hsinbei Road, Yangmei, after they’d put out the flames, as they were, clearing the place, they’d found a body, after identifying it, they suspected it to be the demented elderly 65-year-old woman, Lin.

Based off of understanding, just last month, Lin got lost, and was found by a kind member of the community, who’d taken her to the police station, and was, taken back to her residence by the police.  The firefighters told, that the carbonization of the kitchen was the worst, from the preliminary examinations, they suspected the fire got started, from cooking, but they needed more details to make sure that this was, the cause of the fire.

Lee stated, that for some of the frontal cortex dementia patients, they may not be able to make the correct judgments of where to go to escape, or how they may be “out of it” when the fire started, not knowing whether or not one should run, and causing themselves to get killed.

And, if there are ways, of rehearsing the routes of escape beforehand to avoid the accidental deaths, Lee stated, that this is reliant upon the types of dementia the person has, some may still not remember the route to escape, or lose sense of space, and still couldn’t escape from the fires.

And so, this, is how dangerous it is, to leave an elderly who’s demented on her/his own, and, there should’ve been a caretaker by this elderly woman’s side, but, she didn’t have one, and so, she’d, died in a cooking fire accident.
