Suicide rates among the elderly on the hike here, from the Newspapers, translated…
The city of Taipei, will be marching into the era of the extremely elderly persons by 2025, but the city councilmen found, that between 2009 and 2018, there were a total of 857 elderly who’d died by suicide, the calls to the city reporting these cases, had been increasing these past five years, the government is asking the city to pay attention, to keep the elderly well.
The Department of Sanitation in Taipei stated, that the cause of elderly adult suicide are mostly due to interpersonal relationships, psychological disorders (for example: depression), being physically ill, that in the future, the department will be pushing forth the caring programs, the head of the department, Huang promised, that there are the members of the counseling councils stationed, and will enforce the counseling measures, and the provisions of caring for the elders.
The city councilwoman pointed out, that there’s a steady increase of elderly suicide by the year, and although the rate of suicide had decreased a little in the past two years, but, the reporting of the cases are on the rise, that the city government should, pay more attention.
Councilwoman Wang said, that the city government spent $1.32 million N.T.s in the past three years on providing the counseling to the elderly, that the office had, helped nearly 200,000 individuals, but, some of the elderly who’d committed suicide, they couldn’t get to the cases, they’d fallen through the cracks, she’d called out to the city government, to patch up the holes, to think about putting more resources onto the high-risk individuals, to help reduce the suicide rates.
She also stated, that examining the statistics, it showed, that a suicide case affects at least six other individuals, especially when the elderly mutilated her/himself, or committed suicide, the family members are more than likely to develop a mental condition, for instance, PTSD, sleep disorder, etc., the city government should “keep the minds of the elderly adults healthy”.
And this, is slowly, becoming, a huge problem for the society, because, these elderly couldn’t, take care of themselves, and, their health are, deteriorating, and, with their physical health ailing by the day, they would, suffer from the mental disorders of depression, anxiety, and what-not. This will be a huge problem, because the society is, aging fast, and, people are still, living longer and longer compared to before.
