The Seventy-Something Elderly Murder Suspect Died in Custody After Being Denied from His Paying Bail to Have Himself Hospitalized

A seventy-four-year-old elderly man, Yang was accused of hacking his live-in partner, He, was taken into custody, and indicted, but he’d lost about ten kilograms due to his ailing health in the Taipei Prison Systems, last month he’d filed for going out of the prison to get himself treated for his conditions, the courts refused him, on the 27^th of this month, he’d, died abruptly inside the jail cells; the Hsinbei District Court examined his body, and confirmed the cause of death as his illnesses, they’d ruled out murder.

The elderly man, Yang, in Shijr, Hsinbei City, had been cohabiting with the 46-year-old woman, He for many years, on June 19^th of this year, Yang was suspected of hacking He eight times, murdering her, he’d destroyed her face with a frying pan, dumped the blood covered clothing, the bloody pillows, then, attempted to commit suicide by drinking pesticides, he was found by the daughter of the woman he’d brutally murdered, and rushed to the hospital, where his life was, saved.

Because Yang committed a serious crime, and run the risk of ridding of evidence and was at flight risk, the district attorney’s offices asked for him to be taken into custody, which the judge had, mandated, he was still in prison after the indictments were, processed; but because he had lung problems, asthma, diabetes, and other conditions, during the time he was placed in jail between the time of the trials, he was sent to the verified clinics to get treated, on July 23^rd, he was rushed to Asian-East Hospital for his dizziness, his fever.

Yang’s attorney on October 23^rd, had filed for him being taken to an alternative hospital for treatment, and put him in his own son’s custody.  The Shihlin District Court ruled, based off of the medical records, that his conditions can be monitored by the regular hospital clinic visits, and denied his attorney’s request.

On the sixteenth of this month, the court was in session, Yang appeared in court, weakened, frail, in a wheelchair, couldn’t even stand up, needed a microphone to testify, and he’d, continually coughed.  Yang denied having murdered He, his cohabiting partner, claimed that there would be mahjong buddies who’d come in and out of the residence, that the doors aren’t normally locked, and as he saw his cohabiting partner in bed, covered in blood, he’d drunk the pesticides, “wanted to follow her to die”.

The daughter of the deceased claimed in court angrily, that her mother was killed by eight stab wounds, and her face disfigured, what sort of a state of mind was Yang in?  She’d hoped the judge to “not give him the death penalty, I want him to serve out the final time of his life in jail”.  Yang immediately told her, “I only have one thing to say, I have a cleared conscience when I say, that I didn’t, kill her, I’d never had a word of complaint, in twenty years of living with her.”

But, eleven days later, Yang was found dead in the cells of the holding unit he was placed in, as the daughter of the deceased heard the news, she was, shocked and distraught, couldn’t say a word, stated that she was “dumbfounded”, and after the murder trial started, the families of He filed for a civil suit against him, but, Yang didn’t have any money in his name.

And so, why this elderly had, committed suicide, only HE can tell, but he’d, died, and from all of this, we can deduct (or guess at) the reasons of why he may have killed himself, he’s too elderly, he didn’t want to die in jail, or that he was gnawed by his guilty conscience for murdering his cohabiting partner………
