The Tour Guide in Mumbai

The life and times, of, an ordinary man!  Translated…

This tour guide is sixty-nine years old currently.

In 1946, because of war, his father escaped from his origin in Sandong to Mumbai, met an Indian girl, and two years later, he was, born.

Back then, there were, a lot of Chinese people who’d, escaped to this place, those from Hong Kong opened up restaurants, the Hakkas made the dress shoes, and, the others from other areas of China all, settled here, doing various jobs they could get, they’d, named the location they’d settled at “Nanjing”.  His father made the clothes for people, his mother was, in charge of the household, in most of the Indian families, the men work outside the homes, while the women, in, he’d heard a lot of things about his father’s hometown from his father, but he’d, never made the trip back; for him, Mumbai was, his own home.

Back then, he’d used his fluency in Chinese, Indian and English, started working as a manager at a Chinese restaurant, and after he’d retired, he’d worked as a tour guide and an oral translator.  But it may have been the years, he’d become, hard of hearing, or maybe, because his own father died young, he’d lost his learning to speak Chinese, he’d often waited five seconds, as I’d, asked him my questions, and several times, he’d, not answered the questions I’d, asked him.  But as I saw how hard he’d worked, to try to understand what I was saying, I was, very moved—he’d still, worked very hard to make a living, to take care of his own mother, and his eldest sister too.

And so, this, is the story of a man, who’d, lost his own roots, his connections to his own, origins, but he’d still, worked very hard, to keep his life going, to support his family that needed him, this is a story, of the ordinary people in this world!
