The Year I Stood, Atop Those Waves

Remembering the lessons about life, that’s, passed in form of wisdom, from an elderly captain of a fishing boat, translated…

“You want to learn to spear the swordfish, you need to learn to stand atop the ocean waves.”

That was the year, I was blessed enough, to get involved in filming of a documentary film, the elderly fisher slowly, told of his experiences in spearing the swordfish as the level seven waves came into shore.

“Battling the waves?  How do you get trained to combat it?”, the young translator, as he’d heard the terms related to the video game fights, his eyes, lit up.

“Not the kind of battle in war!  Like standing at attention!  You’d, needed to, stand, straight up at the wharf, in order, to be able to throw the spears into the oceans well!”

Later I’d, found out, that in order to stand atop the waves, you’d needed to learn to listen, watch, and experience the waves first, to the point that your body would, sway like second nature as you’re, near the oceans.  Sounded simple, but, the waves don’t stay steady all the time, and, the angle to which the ships met up with the waves, it’s, never the same twice.

“Without at least FIVE years working on a boat, you can’t possibly pick up a spear”, stated the old captain.

And, being able to ride the waves standing up, to get to spearing down the swordfish, it’s, a training in your physique, as well as your will too.

“Only when the oceans get to its worst, will you be able to, spear those swordfish.”

“We’re, going to spear the fish that comes with the next wave, those that’s swum under us, just let them go.”  I’d, still felt my stomach, churning, as we, rode out on those crashing waves, I felt nauseous, but I can still hear the elderly man’s words, that were, very steadied and stable.

“The moment the ships came down from the waves, it was the closest we’ll ever get to the swordfish, and even, as you’d felt that your legs are, about to break, your hearts, about to bust, you’d, needed to, throw out that spear you have in your hand then.”

The chances always, appeared when you’re at your lowest.

That year, I’d, stood atop the waves, heard the elderly captain, sharing his wisdom of life, and I’d, learned a valuable lesson, not just about swordfish spearing.

So, this younger man learned about life mostly, from the interview with this elderly fisher who’d, had more than his share of catches, and, what the younger man learned, wasn’t just the skills the elderly used, that were, effective in helping him score his catches, but he was able to, take away, more of the wisdoms that the elderly man’s experiences had passed down to him.
