As I’d taken out the trash awhile ago, I bumped into my downstairs neighbor, Mrs. Wang, she looked, lackadaisical, I’d asked her what happened, she’d told me, she was, scammed by the scam artists, and so, she’d, become, depressed, and even started seeing a psychiatrists, and started on her medication too.
Turns on, Mrs. Wang who lived alone rarely read the papers, and, didn’t understand how the scam artists worked. She said she got a call from someone who claimed to be law enforcement, said that her account’s been used by illegal rings, that to protect her assets, they’ll send someone to her place to help her deal with it, she’d not had any idea, didn’t doubt anything, and, just, handed over her savings book and her stamp too.
Later Mrs. Wang told her daughter who lives away, and as the daughter rushed home to report this to the police with her, the account was already overdrawn. The police told Mrs. Wang, that it won’t be easy, to get her money back, that all she can do, is to be on high alert, not to get scammed again. Mrs. Wang felt ashamed, and angry, and blamed herself for being too trusting.
After hearing how she got scammed, I saw the article by the physician, “I don’t just want to rely on god to keep the elderly who lived alone who are demented from getting scammed”, it’d told, that “if the elderly who lived alone are lucky, they get to die alone; but if they’re unlucky, before they die, they will get scammed, taken by the bad people, and tried.” Mrs. Wang is not yet demented, is still quite lucid, the point was that she lived alone, and wasn’t aware of the criminal activities in the world around her, without the families to filter through the suspicious calls, that was why the scam artists were able to scam her.
Later I’d called up the neighbor opposite of Mrs. Wang and told her, that if anything happens in the future, she is to come find us immediately. After all, a distant water can’t quench the thirst of a nearby fire, her children who are away, may not come in time, than the next door neighbors, rather than relying on the government, the neighbors are way better.
And I want to call out to the children, to show more care and concern for the elders who live alone in your families; if you don’t live close by, to remember, to get connected with the elderly parents’ neighbors, and, as you visited home on the holidays or weekends, do inquire to see if there are, suspicious activities going on. The people in Taiwan are usually very connected, so long as you ask the neighbors courteously, to watch out for your own elders, everybody would be more than glad to help out I’m sure!
And so, this, is what’s happening in the scam artists’ realm, they’re, targeting the elderly population, because they know that the elderly population aren’t aware of the measures the scam artists used, and so, that is why the elderly population is the easiest target for them, and, if the neighbors can help out by watching out for one another, then, there would be this network of protection, to prevent the elderly in your local communities from getting scammed too.
