The schools tasks were enormous, the principals often spun like tops, but, nine school principals in Dashu District of Kaohsiung set up the “Principals League”, in order to spark that love of reading in the school age children, they’d made the illustrated books come to life, gave the students a very different experience of reading.
The Shui-Liao Elementary principal, Chou said, that back in 2015, the Buddhist Museum hosted its first international bookfair, invited the principals to attend the “Story sessions under the big tree”, to tell the stories to middle and elementary school age children south of Chiayi, and, she’d started up the idea of performing the stories with the principal of Xipu Middle School, and more principals had, participated in the program since.
The few starting principals through the skits, made the illustrated books such as “Principal Bear” come to life. The very next year, the school principals from Long-Mu Elementary, Dashu Elementary also came onboard, and performed out the story of “The Secrets in the Red Box”, to get the message of showing care and concerns for the handicapped people in the community of how the main character, Bear who was hearing impaired, overcame his hearing impairment problems, helped Grandpa Donkey find that red box, and the kids who were there, were so caught up in the story.
The retired principal from Xipu Elementary, Chang said, although she’s retired, but she’d participated in the performances, she’d felt proud, seeing the students’ passionate reactions, she wouldn’t feel the least bit tiresome, if she had to do it repeatedly.
The local school principals banded together, because they’d wanted to bring the illustrated books to life for the students, they’d become, the very first performance troupe made up of school principals, awhile ago, the local land office of Dashu District was opened, and they were invited to perform.
The principals told, that regularly, they’d been, busy, with the business of running the schools, but, so long as it would help out the students, “No matter how busy, we will all, make the time.”
The storytelling principals, nothing new, but, performing the stories for the students, that’s a new idea, their actions, dedications, had brought this brand new experience of reading to the students locally.
And so, because someone saw a need, and came up with this creative idea, and, there were, several others who were onboard, that is what made this program so successful, and, these school principals turned reading into something fun for the children to experience, which will add to the students’ desires to read even more.
