An American Mom Volunteered at the Libraries Here to Read the Stories to Children for Free

Because Americans realized the importance of reading to their children, LONG before the Asians had! From the Newspapers, translated…

Kayt from the U.S., came to Taiwan eight years ago, to teach English, after she’d made a ton of good friends, currently, she’s not just looking after her four young children, she’d volunteered as a story mom at the Peider Library every Wednesday morning in Sanchong, to read the illustrated books to the children, free of charge. Kayt who loved Taiwan very much said, “I want my children to get to know the places I love.”

From back when Kayt came to Taiwan with her husband to teach English, she’d only planned to stay here for no more than two, three years, but she’d met a ton of good people who’d become her friends, she’d stayed here for eight years, and had four children, all under the age of five, currently, other than being a full-time mom, as a Christian, she’d wanted to give back to the community, and a lot of people she met wanted her to teach their children English, and this was an easy job for her, so she’d found the libraries.

There were only fifteen children who came for the story time, and now, there are, forty, their ages ranged from two to five, Kayt also took along her own four children, she’d given a list of books to the library, take thirty minutes to tell the stories to the group of children, then, have them draw out the stories, to sing and play games together, and her own children got to make friends with the other children from Taiwan too.

Kayt said, her kids made some good friends here, that she’d hoped to introduce the Taiwan she loved so much to her own children. The Peider Library in Sanchong said, that the story time that Kayt held received good reputations, her animated voice and her rich body language kept the children engaged, and there were grandmothers who’d taken their grandchildren to the libraries especially, just to hear the stories told by Kayt.

And so, it’s not accustomed, that parents read their kids the stories here like they would in the U.S., and this mom from the U.S. started telling her stories to her own children first, then, the stories got out, and she’d told them to more children here, so they can learn from the wonderful interactions that adults and children share at Circle Time.
