The Former Professor of Taipei University Accused of Sexually Assaulting His Female Student Twenty Years Ago

The former Chinese Department professor from Beijing University, the current professor in the literature department, Yang Shen was accused by the students for raping a former college student, Yen Gao twenty years ago, and defamed her saying that she was mentally ill, causing her to commit suicide. The Beijing University stated last night they will be looking into the details, and will make the decisions on what to do with the professor.

The People’s Daily Journal reported, that the moral and discipline board of the Beijing University for Professors stated on the sixth, that the school weighs the events heavily, and demanded the board to immediately investigate the matter, and will do in accordance to the law.

Twenty years ago, in March of 1998, the Beijing Public Safety’s West City Station confirmed the incident, and the results of the investigations: in July of 1998, Beijing University only gave Yang Shen a major executive reprimand, but not fired him. Back then, there were the statements of the school celebrating its 100^th anniversary, that they’d not wanted this to get too big, that was why they’d handled the matter so lowkey.

And, twenty years later, on the fifth of this month, Douban net had someone who claimed to be “Yen Gao’s best friend, Yo-Yo Lee who’d gone public with Yang Shen’s behaviors. Yo-Yo Lee retold what had happened in memorial of her friend, Yen Gao, and it’d received the other classmates’ supports, and they’d left the supportive messages confirming the misbehaviors of the professor, which caused the young woman to commit suicide.

After the incident was found out, it’d caused huge tidal waves in the realms of higher education in China. Yang Shen on the fifth wrote a memo to the press, claiming, that there’s no fact in the accusations, that the online messages were considered libel and slander, that he reserved the right to sue. In Yang Shen’s statement to the board, that he was willing, to testify to related details of the case.

One of the person who’d gone public was Yen Gao’s classmate, Ow Wang, he’d stated, “He wants to sue us for libel and slander, we welcome it, there are so many of us, I hope that he sues each and every one of us, then, let’s meet up in court, and he shall see who wins out!”

Back then the dean of Beijing University went to the disciplinary hearing of Professor Yang Shen, he’d recalled, that Yen Gao’s parents went to file the complaints with the Party board, and in the end, a major reprimand was given to Yang Shen, and the parents didn’t have any objections.

On how much he knew of Yang Shen, Fei said, “I’m an elderly man, I have my own interpretations on the matter. Back then, he was a young man, but on the moral side, this young professor, was trouble.”

Due to the victim’s classmates chasing the leads, and, finally, this former professor with the high reputations was brought to the charges, of sexually assaulting a student, and his actions had caused her to commit suicide, and, her friends felt that it wasn’t right that she died, after being raped by him, that, was why they’re all, coming out, with this secret they’d all kept for her for over decades on end.
