A good program, to help those children who can’t afford tutors, to get the extra help they’d, needed for their school studies! From the Newspapers, translated…

“The Students Made Huge Improvements in Their Classes”, the Students and Teachers Reached 380 This Year, the Parents Came Because of the Reputation, But You’d Needed to Qualify, and, You Can’t Pay Your Way into the Tutoring Programs Either

“This is probably, the larges, one-on-one free tutor program in the nation!”, the secondhand book store in Minghsiung, Chiayi continued in its seventh year in offering students from lower-end of the economic statuses one-on-one tutoring sessions, the total number of tutors and students got to 380 this year. Because of the progresses in the students’ grades, a lot of parents came, and were willing, to pay for the sessions for their children, but, the person responsible for setting up the program, Jing-Shan Huang had turned them all down, every evening, the lights got turned on so bright, the students and tutors, crammed up the small space of the bookstore.

The secondhand book store is in its eighth years running in this free one-on-one tutoring program, because of the progresses that the students had made, before the start of this semester’s program, a lot of the parents and teacher in the community called in to ask if they could sign their children or students up for the program. Jing-Shan Huang did the scanning, and, explained to the parents, “It’s set up for the students who are living in poverty-stricken backgrounds, who can’t get enough resources they’d needed!”

With the graduate students and college students who’d, volunteered their times as tutors onboard the program.

Jing-Shan Huang said, that at the start of this tutoring program, there were, only ten students who were being taught, with the various grade levels, the afterschool tutors had a difficult time, teaching children of the various age group, later on, as Zhongzhen and Chiayi University learned about this, they’d, helped the bookstore find the grad students, the college students, to work as free tutors. And he’d decided, to change the format of the class of one-to-one, and found, that the students showed a leap in their grades, and, the students who’d signed up to study, as well as the tutors who sighed up to teach was, increasing by the year, and currently, there are, 142 students being tutored, and 238 teachers.

“The students made great improvements!”, the principal of Hsiuling Elementary, from Chiayi, Lai stated, at the beginning of this bookstore tutoring program, it’d only provided the help for close by schools, the Minghsiung Elementary, the Dong-Rong Elementary. But because he’d heard that the grades improved immediately after the students were in the tutoring program, he’d, immediately called up his old schoolmate, Jing-Shan Huang, and asked if he can set aside some slots for students in the students from Hsiuling. And, last semester, there were only seven students in the tutor program, and, the grades showed much improvement, and, as other parents learned, they were, too eager, to enroll their own into the program too.

And so, the tutoring program set up by this bookstore worked, it’d, helped the students have undivided attention from the tutors, so the tutors can effectively, zoom in on the areas that each student needed to work on individually, and, by having this sort of a one-on-one attention, the students learn better, that, is probably why this program works so well.
