A forty-two year old man, Wei, after graduating from a community college for over twenty years, he’d recalled how back when he was in school, he got into confrontations with classmates, and friends, two years ago in December, he’d gone to four of his former classmates’ and friends’ homes, committed arson, causing multiple individuals to suffer inhalation hazard, and was charged with attempted murder; the judge found that Wei was slow, lacking sound judgments, but, had the intentions of hurting people, sentenced him to nine years, and after he’d served his nine years in prison, he is to continue being on probation for five more years, and the sentence can be, appealed.
Wei was diagnosed as schizophrenic through a psych evaluation, the judge believed, that Wei’s getting bullied in the past, causing him to want to retaliate, may have been caused by his own paranoia, and, as he’d committed arson, he may have a decline in impulse control and cognitive abilities, but, Wei could still ride his motorcycle, found his former classmates’ residence, and pour the flammable solvents, then, start a fire, showing that although he may have been diminished in capacity in thinking, but, not to the point of totally been out of his control.
On the late night of December 26th, in just five short hours, Wei had, mixed in the flammable fluids, and gone to his friend, Liang’s apartment in Meitzuen S. Road in Tainan, poured the flammable fluids in the elevators, lit the fires, then pressed the button for the seventh floor, then left by his motorcycle, and, the fire spread through the basement’s transformer unit, and caused some cars to get burned, and, the sixth and seventh floors’ apartment residents’ complexes getting smoked or burned.
Afterwards, he’d gone to Changwha, to his former classmate, Tsao’s home, Dayoung Road, in Taichung, his classmate, Lin’s, and his classmate, Kao’s, on Wayao Road, to commit arson, he’d sprayed unknown flammable fluids under all the windows there, then, lit the fires, and it’d, damaged the properties, and caused the residents to suffer from smoke inhalation.
Although after he was caught, Wei had, admitted to committing the arsons, he’d claimed that it was because his classmates made fun of him because of his bad grade, that he was going to, amount to nothing, he’d wanted to, teach them their lessons, that he’d had no intentions of murdering anyone. And, the three sites where the arsons happened, after investigations, were found, to have been residences of Wei’s technical high school or technical university classmates, as for the apartment complex in Meitsuen S. Road, the friend named “Liang” claimed by Wei was not known, to live there.
The judge believed, that the places where the fires were set, were all close to the outside entrances, and he’d, set off the highly flammable, highly explosive fluids, that once the fire and smoke started, it may cause the victims to have nowhere to run; and he’d, committed these arsons around the midnight hours, when most people would be, asleep, the judge believed, that Wei had the intentions of committing the murders, and charged him with attempted murder and attempt to commit arson to destroy properties.
Either that this man was, bullied so harshly that he couldn’t, get over it by his former classmates, to do something like this, but, he’d waited, twenty years, to attempt to take revenge for what his former classmates did to him, it’d showed, that this perpetrator was capable of careful planning (which is a higher cognitive function!), and so, mental illness didn’t work in his favor, because the judge saw right through it!
