The ups and downs of her life, and she’d, weathered through it all, and, still, overcome the obstacles that life had, presented to her, translated…
As we’d, started our internships at the hospital for only a short time, a professor told us, “Perhaps, in the future, you may not recall all the names of the patients you ever treated, but you will always remember the faces of your patients, those faces, filled with misery, torture, and you will, remember the days, you’d, looked after them, as well as the whispers into their ears, by their, bedsides.”
Ms. K, a thinly, pale woman, who was about my age, who should’ve been, spending her youthful years, inside a school, or working hard at her job, but, she’d, stepped, into the double-glass door, of the psychiatry department. Solely, because the prime-time soap scenarios, played out, from her life.
A Taiwanese woman, who’d just, set foot outside of the university, went to China to work, and, in the environment filled with Chinese nationals, she’d been, discriminated against, and, in certain scenarios, she’d even gotten, harassed, by her superiors at work. At this time, a senior Taiwanese manager showed, he’d, helped her, listened to her, and, blocked out ALL the attacks from all around for her, and so, they’d, become, more and more, intimate, by the days.
And yet, this man was, already, married, he had a wife who was pregnant in Taiwan. And, the man, begged, and pleaded with Ms. K, to not leave, and so, she’d, stayed, and they’d, started, living together in secrecy in China. And yet, eventually, his wife found out, and sent the private investigators to check out Ms. K, what’s worse was, right around this time, Ms. K found, she was, pregnant with the man’s child.
She’d thought, that telling him, would turn her life around, without knowing, that it was, a brand new beginning, for her newly found, nightmare. The man started becoming, physically abusive, forced her to have an abortion, and, he’d, given her a very, difficult at work too.
Ms. K, swung her leg over, the windowsills of a high floor, and it’d, shocked her neighbors, and they’d, notified the police, the news arrived back to her families back in Taiwan, they’d, coaxed her, to get back to Taiwan, then, sent her, into the psych ward.
That very first day, she’d cried that she wanted to, go back to China, to get revenge on that man. The second day, she’d sat, dumbfounded. The third, she’d, continued, sitting, dumbfounded, and made a scene, but slowly, she had, come to terms, with this, is what would happen. On the fourth day, she’d, started persuading her families, her psychiatrist, that she was, fine, that she’s, okay, to go home now. A week later, right before the Chinese New Year’s, Ms. K, who’s no longer, emotionally stressed, returned home, and the trade-off for her was, that she’d, needed to, go back to the hospital, to treatment by the week.
The day she’d left, we’d all, waved goodbye to her, told one another to, take care, we’d not, said, goodbye.
And, many months later, I’d, gone into a store to shop, and, as I was checking out, I’d found the cashier looked, kinda, familiar.
She’d, looked at me, I looked at her too, we’d, smiled at one another.
“Didn’t you work today?”, she’d asked.
“Nope, don’t have a shift, how have you been lately?”
“I’m fine now! I’d gotten a haircut, and you’d still, recognized me!”
“It’s great, that you feel, better now, I’m truly glad, to have, bumped into you today.”
This time, we’d smiled, and said goodbye, we’d not said to, “take care”.
I know, that she’d, walked out of the valleys of her life, that she’d, embraced, a brand new life for herself now.
And so, despite the trials in this woman’s life, she’d still, overcome, and, this was still, a very slow process, as, healing up from such a serious betrayal certainly, takes, a whole lot of time, and work too, and yet, this woman had, overcome her past, and, moved on, to bigger, better, and brighter things that awaits her in her own life!
