A Drug Dealer Was Given the Life-Sentence, Violated His Parole, Sent Back to Prison Again, Weathered Through Losing His Wife and Mother, Hoped that His Son, After Serving His Jail Terms, to Help Him Pay Back the Debts He’d Owed.
Wang, the inmate who was sentenced to life, had his parole revoked for breaking the laws, believed that he will never walk out of prison a free man, last year he’d hung himself in the jail cell in Yilan; and, his son who was also serving time for drugs in the same jail, was told that his father had, committed suicide by the officials, and the note left by his father told him to “make an honest living”.
The sixty-two-year-old Wang was sentenced to life for selling a level-one substance, he was paroled on good behaviors in 2015, but failed to report to his P.O. while out on parole, had his parole withdrawn, and sent back to jail in July the following year.
Wang was taken to the penitentiary in Yilan, and, based off of the rules, if the parole of a life-term inmate was taken back, he’d needed to serve another twenty-five years before he was eligible for parole again, meaning that it would take him until eighty-seven to have the possibilities to walk out of jail.
Wang’s son in February of 2015 was sent to the same prison for robbery and drug charges, the father and son met up in jail. And, based off of the rules, as the related family members served time in the same jail systems, in order to prevent collaboration, they’re not allowed to share a cell, but, the families who were serving in the jails together have at least one get-together per month.
At the end of 2016, Wang’s wife died in a car wreck, and after the Chinese New Year the following year, Wang’s elderly mother died of illness; as Wang received the news of the death of his own wife and mother, believed that there was, nothing keeping him going anymore, one day early morning last year, he’d, hung himself with his prison clothes, and, because he was lying on the cell bunks normally, his jail mate didn’t notice anything, and as he was found the next day, he’d, already, died.
The prison guards found the Buddhist beads and a last note next to Wang, left to his son in the same jail, other than thanking him for supporting him economically in the past, he’d mentioned that he’d owed a lot of favors outside of prison, that he’d hoped that his son could pay back the people that he’d, owed after he finishes serving his time, and hoped to be buried in the family graves.
As Wang’s son was told by the guards of his father’s suicide, he was distraught, and because Wang’s son won’t be done serving until 2021, the prison can only allow him to head home to the funeral of his father with the officers by his side, to help settle with the final affairs roughly.
The Yilan Prison stated, that the inmates were mostly in for drug charges in the Yilan and Hsinbei regions, that there were, a lot of fathers and sons, brothers, and, the father and son had filed to see one another in jail face-to-face, but, they’d not expected this suicide at all.
And so, this, is how the consequences of one’s life finally getting caught up with the man, because his father had, broken the terms of his parole, and received, a harsher sentence and he’d thought he couldn’t get out of jail anymore, and felt bad, and committed suicide. It wasn’t the systems that’s caused this death, it was how the man couldn’t cope with the consequences of his own behaviors…
