A man, Ma, over two decades ago, was involved in a rape case, which he’d escaped bail, and had an active arrest warrant on him, he’d hidden himself in the middle parts of the country, and worked odds and ends job to make his own ends meet, he’d not gotten caught, because he’d used his older cousin’s identity, memorized everything too well. But, due to the declines in his memories, on the fourteenth this month, he was stopped by the police, and, misremembered the information wrong, and that, was how the police finally caught him.
The Taichung City Police and Kaohsiung District Court had, joined forces in the investigations, and found, that the 66-year-old Ma, twenty-four years ago, was charged with a rape in Kaohsiung, and during the trial conducted by the Kaohsiung D.A.’s office, he’d denied his involvement, that he’d escaped bail and went into hiding, the Kaohsiung District Courts put out an APB on him on February 3rd, 1994, and the statute of limitation is set to expire by April 8th of next year.
Ma told the police, that after he’d started hiding in the middle strip of the island, in the twenty-three years he’d rented a home in Taichung, Miaoli, and Changwha, would switch residences once every six months. He had cut off contacts with his own families, not gone out to drink with his friends, and not gone to any of the illegal places, he was able to pass the police checkpoints successfully, by memories his own older cousin’s personal information. And because of how he’s getting older, the police stopped pulling him over, and so, he’d stopped, reciting the personal information of his older cousin since, and started riding a scooter, instead of driving a car.
The police said, that on the afternoon of the fourteenth, Ma was riding past Hsiu-Chih Street, and was stopped by the police, he’d looked a bit, unsettled. He was suspected of misremembering the information, and the police couldn’t identify him, and because he couldn’t produce his own identification, the police took him in.
The officers told him, that they can find out who he is by the facial recognition programs, Ma admitted to being the defendant of a rape case, that over twenty years ago, while his trial was still in session, he’d escaped bail and went into hiding, that very evening, the police sent him to Kaohsiung’s Court to get processed.
The district court in Kaohsiung stated, that the case happened twenty-four years ago, that back then, the court only had his active arrest warrant on record, nothing else, there’s no indictment or other papers on file in the systems, plus Ma denied the allegations, and there wasn’t any clear evidence, tying him to the case, the courts gave him house arrest, and set a court date for later.
And so, this, is how no matter how you tried to escape, you still won’t, because like this case had shown, it’d been, over twenty years ago since this man was indicted, and skipped bail, and it took justice, twenty three WHOLE years, to finally get caught UP with him.
