From the Newspapers, translated…
Awhile ago in Yunlin, there was a young man who’d attempted to control students in middle school with illegal substances, whose father died when he was younger, and his mother just left him. Liu said, that had the government stepped in earlier, and gave the supports, the counseling to this young man, then, it would’ve, prevented everything from happening.
Liu believed, that the social welfare programs should be amended, but first, the government must have a precise estimate, “Actually, there may be up to 30,000 adolescents who were not looked after, but the statistics of the government only showed 10,000, and the 20,000 that are missed, are completely, forgotten.”
“There’s only one facility to place these teens in the city of Taichung, let alone, those distant areas without enough resources”, Liu pointed out, how there’s, a lacking in personnel of social workers, that social workers should be given more power, to provide the needed care for these teens.
He said, he was also from a single-parent family, that he empathized with these abandoned youths. A lot of these youths have lowered sense of themselves, and wouldn’t expect the government to help them out, it’s really heartbreaking to see.
Liu believed, that the government needed a PRECISE estimate of how many youths are there, that way, the government can know how much money to put in, how much resources to give, in the past, everybody does her/his own thing, he will help the government set up a combined platform, to strengthen the safety net, to help these abandoned youths back on their feet again.
Due to the lacking in the systems, because the local and national government aren’t on the same page, that, is why there are, those teens who are considered lost youths that weren’t accounted for, and, it is important, to standardize the process, of tallying up the total number of teens who are living in risky environments, and that way, we’ll find an effective way (like apprenticeship programs, schools, etc., etc., etc.) to effectively help them out.
