A Blessing that Came Eighteen Years Late

A son, using his scholastic achievement, to “EARN” his father’s way back into his mother’s family as their “kin”, this is, very awful, translated…

My cousin, Der got into medical school this year, the news quickly got to everybody in the neighborhood, not only that his mother and maternal grandfather were both teachers, but because he has a father who wasn’t accepted by his maternal grandfather’s family.  My uncle came from a farming family in the countryside, with his passions for photography, he’d gone to Taipei to take photography courses, and didn’t come back to his hometown until after thirty years of age, to open up a shooting studio.  But due to his limited resources, he’d paled by comparison in equipment and range compared to others in the industry, he was able to keep his photo studio going, with his great photography skills.

Affinity was, harder to capture the light.  That year, my aunt graduated out of teacher’s college and returned back to Yunlin to teach, with long black hair, pale complexion, she’d become, worshipped like a goddess by her students.  Plus, her father was a reputable high school teacher locally, and her older brother was the doctor who took care of everybody’s health in town, she had countless number of suitors.  And yet, in the eyes of the goddess, she only has eye, for someone who know what true beauty is.

My uncle’s talent made my aunt swoon, and yet, the love that the two of them shared, wasn’t blessed upon back then, whether it be statuses, level of education, or occupation, there were a lot of people who’d commented, that my aunt was, WAY out of my uncle’s league.

My aunt went against her parents’ wishes, and became the wife of a photographer.  Der’s maternal grandfather never admitted to having this son-in-law, and on the second of the Chinese New Year, he’d banned his own daughter from visiting home.  And because the business was slow for his photography studio, my uncle did some agricultural work to keep the household going, but, it’d made his own father-in-law look down on him even more.

Are people really practical?  The turn of events came from how Der, my cousin was a good student.  He’d made grandfather notice him, and allowed him, to enter into a home that recognized him.  My grandfather started calling up this number one student of his entire school now, started bragging to his friends, on how amazing Der is.  Der said, that he will NEVER forget the moment he was admitted to the medical schools, his father was so moved, that he’d grabbed a hold of his shoulders, said, in a sobbing voice, “Son, you’d made me proud!”, and, our grandparents sent out their congratulations in the shortest time personally.

This blessing that came eighteen years late, finally made it inside this family, the son became, the light of his own father’s romance.

So, this just showed, how narrow-minded this family is, and because this young man’s father was not as formally educated as his mother’s family, so his own grandfather looked down on his father, and it wasn’t until this young man was accepted into medical school with his outstanding scholastic performances, did the grandfather reowned him back, and what sort of a value are we, teaching our own young, by doing this?  Oh yeah, it’s okay, for us, to look down on those who are NOT working in the reputable occupations, you have GOT to be shitting me on this!!!
