Life, the Obstacle Course

We’d, Wronged the Students in the Distant Regions

Opinion, formed over the observations of the provisions of education to the distant regions, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

Recently, the Department of Education met several times over the issues of the ancient texts, I’m somewhat moved, because that meant, the officials, really cared about how well the children are learning.  But, I’d also found something very alarming at the same time too.

I’m working with a second year middle school student who’s excellent in math, but couldn’t even differentiate between and, the, this, not in English.  I’d found two other instructors, who’d worked with the children in the distant regions, I’d had them take the sixth grader’s English general test, the translations from English to Chinese on the test were easy, like: (1) They are our sons and daughters.  (2) He doesn’t listen to music everyday.  (3) How does your son go to school everyday?

The results, there was one instructor whose first-year middle school students only managed to answer FOUR questions correctly on average.  While the students who had help learning in the same regions answered twenty-four questions correctly.  In another class, the students answered an average of seven questions correctly out of twenty-five.  The student who are in the tutoring program in the same areas answered twenty correctly out of the twenty-five.

It’s assured, that the English skills of the children in the distant regions are awful, but, they’d also lagged behind in Chinese and math skills too.  All of these children, after entering into the middle school years, most had difficulties, catching up to the rest of the class.  And, in English, naturally, they couldn’t, understand a single word, and because they’d already lagged behind in math, they couldn’t master the sciences.  As for the old-styled texts or the vernacular texts, it probably, didn’t make any sense to them at all.

What’s worse, due to the impacts from the reduction in birth rate, all of these children can go all the way into their high school years, and by then, a lot of the teachers couldn’t do anything else to help them catch up, and entering into universities, how are they supposed to, get up to the level?  This is a huge waste in resources, for the nation, as well as the individuals too.  A lot of the college graduates couldn’t find jobs after graduation, and even if they were able to find jobs, the wages were, menial, and why is that?  Of course it wasn’t the college professors’ faults, but instead, because the students failed to get their strong skills in the fundamentals back in their primary and secondary education years.

A lot of people may blame these children, for not being studious enough, and all the children in the foundation are all from distant areas, and the foundation insisted on taking on the children who couldn’t manage in school, but the fact of the matter was, they’re all able, to learn all the basic skills.  If the government really DOES care about the problems in education in the distant regions, then, these students couldn’t be as bad as they currently are.  And I’d lectured on this trend for so very long, but it just, doesn’t improve.

Why don’t the governments care about these groups of children?  I believe, because these children’s inability to perform well enough in school, isn’t a political issue for the government officials, and neither of the parties showed an interest, in resolving this problem.

But education has NOTHING to do with politics, and you can’t just ignore this group of children, simply because the politicians take no interest in the matter.  The mandatory education system is not setting up a school, having the students attend the classes, but the schools needed to make sure, that the students can, acquire a certain level of knowledge.  If that can’t be managed, and as a student graduate from the elementary years, and still couldn’t master understanding the simple English sentences, then, the government has, done them wrong!

So, this showed, the lacking of the education systems in the distant regions, and because there’s this lacking in the system of education in the distant regions, these students in these faraway schools won’t have the same sets of skills comparing to the students who are at the same grade level, but living outside these areas, and that, would be a huge problem, because remember, these children, will be ruling the world one day, and if we can’t even, manage to EDUCATE them well enough so they have enough of a skill set, then, the world surely will, go to RUINS!!!
