The paper reported on how Vietnamese migrant worker got shot to death, and, I don’t condone the officer who fired the gun, but, what we need to look at is: are we really treating the migrant workers kindly enough, like they’re, one of our own?
Recently, I’d taken the person whom we’d hired to look after my mother to the doctors, we’d waited outside the doctor’s office, and, although her number wasn’t up yet, but the nurses called the names based off of the arrival times; until there were just, the two of us there, then, the nurse called the name of the woman we’d hired to watch over our mother’s name, and if this is not discriminatory, I don’t know what would be?
Reasons of why the migrant workers may escape, other than for personal reasons, it usually ties in with how the employer had, overworked and underpaid them, and that there are, little to no chance of working overtime. And, I have some measures toward how to find and catch those escaped workers:
- The job of overseeing the escaped workers are done by the police units (office of immigrations, police department, and coastguards, etc., etc., etc., units of the law), but the government agency with powers overseeing all migrant workers is the Department of Labor, and yet, the Department of Labor was only responsible for getting the workers into the country, leaving the catching of the escaped workers to the police units to handle.
- If the reason for the workers running away is due to how the employers are abusive, not paying them enough, then, the employers should be punished for it.
- The units assisting the investigations of the escaped workers should be better trained, especially having seminars, sharing the experiences of investigating of the matter, passing the torch, to prevent tragedies. Based off of my experiences, there were Vietnamese migrant workers who were proud that they’d chased France, U.S., and China out of their country, that they’d never even, taken one defeat, but as I was doing the investigations, the law enforcement officials, after putting the chains on the Vietnamese escaped workers, they’d still managed to, get away; we can understand the experiences of these officers, fearing that they’d fight hard, to resist arrest, for the purpose of running away, make more money, so they can, head home.
So, the system IS flawed not just on the side of the migrant workers, but on the people who hired them too, and, what the writer experienced with the hospital was totally unjust, just because they’re not from here, that doesn’t mean that the society should give them a less-than-human treatment, I mean, surely, there are those migrant workers who’d mistreated the individual they looked after, but hey, we’re the ones who needed their help in our separate households, so, shouldn’t we, treat them like humans, at least? And, if we give these migrant workers enough respect, I’m sure, that they’d be, more than likely to, reciprocate our kindness toward them, and take better care of our loved ones.
