The ADVERSE effects of SPOILING a child ROTTEN, translated…
“Cheng’s wife asked me for money again!”, my mother started complaining to me.
Cheng and his wife worked together, ran a steel mill together for years, and they’d bought the parts of the machines and manufactured them and sell them to the shops that needed, and provided the services of repairs for the items. They’d not had children together, and, they adopted a relative’s son, treated him like he were their own.
Uncle Cheng was very optimistic, and left the household economics to Aunty Cheng, and would head to the karaoke to sing every now and then, and he was satisfied, having these smaller pleasures in his life. During the years of the economics being well, his factory made him a lot of money, he bought two houses, it’d made all of us, his neighbors, envious of him.

Uncle Cheng’s wife had spoiled Jia-Hsiang from when he was a young boy, gave him any and everything he’d asked her for, and, the factory was up and running, with Uncle Cheng, not being able to discipline his own adoptive son too. Jia-Hsiang studied in the technical high schools for five years, switched three schools totally, in the end, he’d dropped out and enlisted; Uncle Cheng originally hoped, that after being trained in the armed services, it’ll help him turn around, but, things didn’t go according to his wishes.
After Jia-Hsiang got out of the services, he’d hollered on he wanted to get married, the woman was a classmate from his technical high school years. But, the two of them not only didn’t help out with the family business, they’d slept in every single day, and would stay up all night long, watching the movies or surfed on the web all night long. And Aunty Cheng had bought a Mercedes Benz for Jia-Hsiang and his wife, every time that Jia-Hsiang goes out, she’d handed him $5,000 to $10,000N.T. at a time, said that if he drove a Mercedes and not had any cash on him, it wouldn’t look good. In a decade’s time, Jia-Hsiang bought and sold of a total of SIX Mercedes, and every two years, he’d bought a new one, and, naturally, all the taxes, the tickets, the car insurances, and the payments owed on the cars, Aunty Cheng took care of.
After having a son and a daughter, Jia-Hsiang had brought joys to Uncle and Aunty Cheng’s lives. The two grandkids started in private kindergarten, took up a ton of talents including arts and swimming, and, taking care of these two young grandchildren became their sweetened burdens.
Later, Jia-Hsiang got divorced, and gave a house that belonged to Uncle and Aunty Cheng as alimony, reason being that he was caught by his wife, having had affairs. But, there was always a new woman hanging around him, he’d switched partners again, and again, and we’d all said, that a rich man can make do.
In recent years, the economics wasn’t doing so well, the chain wholesale shops, and the super convenience shops made its way in, and, Uncle Cheng’s clients were mostly small-capital shop owners, they’re already suffering in their businesses, and most had, closed down shop. But the factory had to set out the products for the clients to select from, and, they couldn’t make the deadlines for the shipments of the manufactured goods, and so, Aunty Cheng took out a second mortgage without Uncle Cheng’s knowing with one of their properties, and borrowed even more money from their friends and relatives, not daring to let Uncle Cheng know, and recently, she was diagnosed with depression too.
Their son, grandson, and the hired maid’s huge costs, became, this abyss they can’t get themselves out of, and, not knowing how to save up their money had, caused them to lose ALL their money. And, at this time, Uncle Cheng was diagnosed with third-stage lung cancer, and, the cost it takes, to hire a nurse’s aide, is unavoidable now.
“You’d ruined yourselves, by spoiling your children rotten”, as the Taiwanese proverb had told. Jia-Hsiang started spending listlessly, because his adoptive parents made a lot of money from before, but even IF there’s an accumulation of a lot of wealth from generations before, it’s bound to get spent completely. And yet, Aunty Cheng still couldn’t see the fact, that she’d, spoiled her own adoptive son rotten, and she’s responsible for what happened to the household economics. Uncle Cheng didn’t have this pressing senses of awareness, worked hard all his life, and now, he’s, battling this illness, and he’d not had a single clue, that the empire he’d built up, was about, to collapse, it’s truly, sad, for us, to see that this was, happening to them.
And so, this, would be, the ADVERSE effect of spoiling your own young, you’d end up, with ALL the consequences of life, and it’s all on Y-O-U, just like it’s all on these adoptive parents who thought they were only, “loving” their adoptive son right, by giving him whatever he’d asked of them, without realizing, that it’s more important, to TRAIN this god damn SPOILED rotten BRAT to become self-reliant!
