The city of Hsinbei hosted its very first top ten school pet poll, the twenty-four mascots fought hard to gain the awards, some got dressed up cute, some dressed up handsomely, they’d brought a ton of laughter to the school children; and yet, before they became the pet representatives of these schools, they’d had, their separate hardships of life already.
The Animal Protection’s Agency’s director, Chen said, training the stable pets to be study buddies of children, sending them into schools, can help plant down that seed for the thought of animal protection, at the same time, it’d helped the students understand the uniqueness of life, help root down the life education lessons.

Rescued from the Puppy Mills, Becoming Cherished by the School Children
In order to become a study buddy dog, the animals needed to evaluated in three aspects: obedience, focus, and easily getting close to people. As the puppies were placed belly up in the palms of humans, pressed down on its chest with one’s right hand, if the puppy couldn’t stop struggling, that meant that it couldn’t be obedient enough, and it must be, eliminated. And, as the animals heard the noises from all around, they’d straighten up the ears, scanned their environments with their eyes, and still stayed focused, and that, would mean that they’re, qualified. In the end, if the puppies wanted to bite as they were touched by humans, if they run off, that would be calls for eliminations too, and, in the past two years, there were, a total of FIVE study-buddy dogs that were certified.
V, a Chihuahua that was rescued from an illegal puppy mill in Sinchuang many years ago, is already trained as a study-buddy dog, it’s now, going to school with the children. The teachers and students celebrated its birthday, and, the students made a line of products using V’s face, she’d very loved by the kids. Another puppy rescued out of a puppy mill, Ann, also entered into school, and, stayed focused, beside the children as they studied; every time she’d shown her face, the class would holler for her.

Lily is No Longer a Stray, Instead, She’d Become, a Diplomat
The Bitou Elementary School had adopted a stray, Lily, in the daytime, she’d accompanied the children, and in the evenings, she’d lain on the field, and waited for the eleven instructors to return to their dorms to sleep. The school principal, Yu-Fang Chen told, that there was a teacher that returned to the dorms at three in the morning, and was greeted by Lily who was excited to see her, the teacher was, very moved.
Last year, while Lily was keeping the grounds of the school, she’d discovered FIVE cobras and started barking incessantly, the teachers realized that something was up, and rushed over, reported the cobras to the fire department, and this saved the children and the teachers from getting bitten.

Lily also knew how to do high-fives, and sit, and can shake too, and, a lot of people who’d visited the school wanted to be in a picture with her. V, Ann, and Lily are all signed up, for the online competition of being the BEST school pet.
Yuan-Chaung Chen said, that there were, approximately twenty thousand stray dogs and cats in the city of Hsinbei, and, the Animal Protection Agency can only have room for 2,000 animals, that they’d needed to, scan through the animals thoroughly, to decide which ones to keep, and find potential trainees that can become study-buddies, and company for elderly, to raise up the rate of adoption, to create new meanings for these lives.
So, this, is a great program, training the strays into service dogs, and, this, is WAY more humane, than putting those stray animals to death, because let’s face it, the city pounds are, way too populated, and, the strays weren’t neutered or spayed, and they just, keep on reproducing, overpopulating and causing troubles for the community, but this program put the new meaning back into these animals’ lives.
