Not being able to go abroad, you can still make friends internationally, the Department of Education of Hsinbei City started back in 2014, started the trial “Classroom Connection Social Network” program, allowing the teachers to search for a class internationally, which they are able to teach to, sending and receiving postcards, not only were they able to discuss international matters, it also puts Taiwan on the maps.
The plan was subsidized by the extra funding from the Department of Education, the teachers can log onto the international education platform iLearn, to find other matching school instructors, and afterwards, they can set up a time to have live-recordings of the classes together. The Er-Chong Middle School’s instructor, Wu took her class and used skype to have webcam class sessions with students from Egypt, discussed the matter of world’s water resources.
The instructor also held a forum with students from Pakistan to discuss how to eat more nutritiously. Through the screens, they’d shared with the students in Pakistan, the celebrations in Taiwan, as well as the foods; the middle school student, Hsu said, because using webcam, there’s a need to speak English, he was able to increase his verbal skills.

There were many other schools that used the letters, postcards, to get the students to have foreign penpals too, the Chingshui High School and its sister school, Fukuyama Myoodai exchanged postcards of the students, the student here, Liao told, “Exchanging postcards makes me more expectant than just interacting on LINE, it had the warmth of the written words on it.”, other than having her interests sparked, she’d made up her mind, to head to a university in Japan to study.
Currently, this program had been expanded to a total of seventy-five schools.
So, this, is a great program, allowing the students here, to gain a worldly view, to get them to know that there are other cultures different than ours out there, and thus, they will, hopefully, learn to appreciate the differences in the various cultures, and grow up, with that tolerance and pass it on.
