Who’s Going to Look After Our Mother When the Nurse’s Aides are Off on the Weekends?

This would be, the IMPACT from the days off policies mandated by the newly elected president here, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

The implementing of President Tsai’s policy of the Days Off System, it’s just, that the aftermath is now, only starting to, take effect. Based off of the estimates of the Labor Department’s Survey for Workers Needed, Over HALF of the workers are hired, to fulfill the needs of the lack of personnel on the weekends in the restaurant, hotel, and medical industries.

The Days Off System not only increased the cost of operating companies, it’d also caused the hike in the prices of things too. Originally, the government hoped to get the employees paid more for their work, to reduce the employers’ demands for employees to put in their overtimes; but, before the laborers received their wage increases, the costs already got, bounced off onto the consumers, and, there’s a hike in prices in the food, medical, and transportation industries, even the fees for the doctors’ offices increased too.

Taiwan is faced with the increase in elderly population now, and, the purpose of Long-Term Care 2.0, is in providing a high-quality, fair-cost, system of care, to alleviate the burdens on the family members, and focusing on the local systems of elderly caretaking too.

As a medical professional, I know, that the government’s pushing for the long-term care programs is from a good place, it’s also, a policy, however, in the smaller towns, the smaller nursing homes are faced with the impacts of the programs of days off; if the costs of personnel gets completely transferred onto the public, it would surely, impact the families who needed the long-term care provisions programs, but, does the government that lives FAR away from reality know?

There was a member of the public that stated, that her mother had been bedridden long-term, and needed to have the nursing caretakers to her home, to care for her, and the medical professionals, to change out the feeding tubes, the catheters too, but, because of this new program of days-off, there may not be any services on the weekends and the holidays, it’d made her worry a lot, if she couldn’t get a day off the next day, who will be, looking after her mother?

Simply stated, the Days-Off program means, that there won’t be ANY overtime work allowed on the weekends OR the holidays, even IF you couldn’t manage to finish your workload from your regular forty-hour workweek, you still couldn’t stay at the offices to finish, or, the employers will be fined. And, for families with elderly, the costs are surely, to increase; although the Department of Sanitation and Safety stated, that the caretakers would need to follow an alternative of the Labor Laws, that the Days-Off policies wouldn’t have any impacts; but, looking at it whole, the smaller-scale nursing homes are having a hard time, keeping up, and, the government’s rules were strict, and they couldn’t defy it, and, the hiked up cost will only, go to the families who required this sort of services being provided.

a group of elders, showing what MORE is needed in the Long-Term Care 2.0 programs, photo from online…

Based off of the Statistical Measurement Office, the index measurement for elderly had passed a hundred now, the population of elderly had, surpassed the population of the young; those families that couldn’t make a lot of money as is, will keep on, living BELOW the poverty lines, and, those families on the edge of poverty, will keep on feeling the strains of moneys, keep having the stresses of life increased on them by the day. And, the cost of the families, are barely made, and once the smaller-scaled nursing homes couldn’t operate due to lack of funding, then, in the end, the prices of placing the elderly in these places will all, be BACK on the public.

So this, IS the vicious cycle caused BY the government’s “days-off” system, and, I’m SURE, that as the president of Taiwan had SIGNED this into law, she only intended to help out the members of the regular nine-to-five office workers, without realizing, that there are, OTHER industries (like the public transportation systems, nursing home staff members, etc., etc., etc.) whose services are needed 24/7 and that still just showed, how it can impact EVERYBODY when someone (in this case, it’s the god DAMN, president!!!) thought up of an idea, and, just PUT it into LAW (in writing), without thinking about the CONSEQUENCES, or the IMPACTS it might have on the society as a whole…
