She Found the Inspirations for Her Designs from Her Own Deafness, Told the Stories Using the Carpentry Projects She’d Made

The severely auditory impaired student from Nanhwa University, Hsui-Ling Mao can’t hear, and couldn’t express herself clearly verbally, but, she’d carried her positive attitude toward life, her willingness and ability to learn, she’d focused on her goals of carpentry and designs; a wooden stool had gained her the second-place trophy in the national skills competition for the impaired, yesterday, the Da-Guan Chou Foundation awarded a scholarship to this “hearing impaired designing angel”.

Yesterday, Mao was presented with the award from the foundation, she’d used her unclear verbal communications, word by word, spoke out her gratitude, and although, most of the audience couldn’t necessarily understand her, but, they’d all felt how much passion she has toward life. The founder of the Foundation, Jing-Hwa Chou was moved to tears, said, “It’s truly amazing how Hsiu-Ling was able to accept her own handicaps and kept working hard toward her goals in life!”

Mao, at age 22, is a junior in Creative Product Designs major of Hwa-Nan University, she was diagnosed as having hearing impairments when she was born, couldn’t be schooled in the regular schools. Because both her parents also have hearing impairments, their household economics wasn’t well at all, causing her to get upset easily as a child, she’d felt awful about herself, and, refused to talk, and, no matter how hard she’d worked in the intervention programs, how focused she was in school, she couldn’t communicate with others, and she’d worried more about how others would think of her.one of her designs, photo from online…

“I’m very grateful for the professors who’d helped me, my classmates too!”, Mao’s translator stated, that she’s more than blessed, that in her learning processes, she’d met a TON of people who offered assistance to her, including her former classmates from the Tainan Special Eds school, and teachers who’d encouraged her to talk more, to overcome her physical disabilities, after she’d started going to Nanhua, the Dean, Cheng’s being her guide, instructing her, all of these individuals had, helped her take that important step out in her life.

She said, she had a hard time, adapting to living in university, but, Professor Cheng and her fellow classmates all encouraged her continually, helped her find her interest in carpentry and designs, to help her see the beauties in the creations, and, she was able to gain more self-confidences through entering into competition and winning.

She wanted to shout out to the community of impaired individuals, “Don’t give up, you must love yourselves!”, do the best you can, give back to the community.

So, this woman had a strong support system, her instructors, her classmates, even her dean, they’d NEVER given up on her, which made her more driven, to NOT give up on herself, and, she persisted in her pursuits of her goals, and, despite her hearing impairments, she’d made a name for herself, become an inspiration to others.
