The odds are really bad here, from the Front Page Sections, translated…

If the demented elderly had, wandered off and not gotten found immediately, and nobody assisted the individual to find her/his way home, the elderly may lose her/his life; the NTU doctor, Ming-Chang Chiu pointed out that after forty-eight to seventy-two hours of a demented elderly being missing, if nobody found the individual, then, it would cause the rate of death to increase by thirty to forty percent.

The First Substation of the Taichung Police Department received a total of 188 cases of elderly who’d gone missing, and, they were able to, find back ninety percent of these, and, they’d managed to found another 110, from those who’d gone missing, but never recovered these couple of years. The patrol office told, that after seven, if they see elderly who were out on their own, wandering about, they’d gone up and inquire, and, eight or nine out of ten were, demented elderly who had, wandered off.

In order to help recover the lost elderly who are demented, the police reminded the public, that the families should leave a name tag on the elders, with name and address and phone number; but, with some elders, they refused to believe that they were, demented, and, refused to wear the identification bracelet, the family can tell them, that the bracelets can help improve their physical strengths or make them remember better, so the elders would be willing, to wear the identification bracelets out.

A patrol officer in Taichung a few days ago, saw an elderly man, Yao in his nineties, looking around him, the elderly was demented, and went out alone, wanted to get back home, but, thought that every road looked the same, and couldn’t tell which one would lead him home again. The officer found a business card on his shirt, it was the daughter who worried that her father may get lost, and put a business card of her father’s inside his shirt pocket, with the phone number and the address and it’d, become, useful, in helping the elderly man get back home.

the streets all looked the same!  Not my photo…

So, we have, elderly who’d wandered off and couldn’t find their way home again, and, this, is very important, because the longer these elderly are away from home, the smaller the chances the families will find them alive…so, it is, important, for these elderly to carry alternative forms of identification, like those I.D. bracelets, or information of the families on a keychain, so when they DO get lost, they will be able to get back home, safe and sound.
