A Locksmith Turned into an Artist, Made a Name for Himself in Canada

A man, with a knack for the artistic, despite his physical disabilities, he’d, pursued his own dreams and is a huge success! From the Newspapers, translated…

Rong-Zong Yen, with the reputation of “the Father of Locksmiths”, since he’d retired from working as a locksmith, he’d started learning how to paint with oils, he’d made his own styles “painting with the light sources”, his five-year pursuit in art had gained him a title of a master in SFCA in Canada already. He had a serious case of osteoporosis and spinocerebellar atrophy as well as muscular atrophy, his physicians consulted him not to paint again, but he’d insisted, “Quality of life is more important”, and he’d planned to keep on painting.

As Yen was growing up, his family wasn’t well-to-do, at age fifteen, he’d become a locksmith, and studied various measures of opening locks, and he’d once cracked open a GM side file cabinet lock which was claimed that nobody can ever open, even the locksmith professor from Police University, Hsieh had asked him to lecture in class. After he’d retired at the age of thirty-four, he’d lived in Canada, was inspired by an older artist locally and started painting, having a very low grade in art in his primary school years, he’d shown amazing talents.

The first painting that Yen did, was chosen at the Canadian Art Exhibition’s showbiz piece, he’d gotten into the status with the rest of the other Canadian masters. He’d learned to paint all by himself, and, in one year, his art was selected eight times, to go on tour across the U.S., in five years’ time, he had gained a place in the art master’s SFCA status, became, an alternative kind of “Light of Taiwan”.

Yen said, he didn’t begin art with sketching, instead, he’d begun with his own eyes, and he’d researched the effects of light on the eyes and, on one of the exhibitions, because the lighting wasn’t good enough, it’d made his art lose the flair, he’d thought about it hard all night long, and, as the dawn broke, he’d finally realized, that his art, was leading the viewers by a point in lighting, and he’d named his way of painting, “Chasing the Light”.

Yen had been overcome with physical illnesses, and a serious case of osteoporosis, at the age of one, he’d become, immobilized, lacked strength in his limbs, and needed help in drawing, the doctor consoled with him to stop painting, but he’d believed, “There’s only unwilling that won’t work, otherwise, ALL else is possible”, each stroke he’d made, was calculated, although he was slow to paint this way, but, “Quality is more important than life”, and he planned to keep on painting.
