Kindness Found, in a Hospital Environment

Kindness that flowed in the hospitals, from a stranger to a fellow patient, translated…

After he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, Zhong’s world was, completely, turned upside down, since then, he’d become, STUCK in the cycles of long-stay at the hospitals. After multiple life-threatening brain surgeries, there are now, so many sutures, Zhong who’s now, unable to work told me, that the hospital bills he’d accumulated had, put his home’s economics in jeopardy.

That day, I’d entered into the examination room, to take his temperature and blood pressure, he acted very courteous, kept saying thank you to me, and asked about the elderly and blind Fa, how come he didn’t have anybody to look after him? I’d told Zhong, that Fa’s family members didn’t want to spend the money to hire a nurse’s aide for him, and hoped that he could, keep an eye on how Fa was doing.

After hearing Fa’s story, Zhong got angered and stated, “How can there be these kinds of family members?”, he’d told me, that he’d taken care of his own parents and his wife who’s now, in a vegetative state all on his own, after his wife died, he’d lost his will to live, but because of his children’s consoling with him, that’s given him the will to survive.

As Zhong talked, he’d started crying, extended his left arm, to show me that deep, and long scar on his forearms.

For the days that followed, I’d always saw Zhong, with Fa on his arms, walking in the hallways; the patient taking care of another patient, it was, such, a moving sight to see. I’d thanked Zhong, he’d told me, “No problem, this, is the only thing I can do. Besides, we are, roommates, it’s, a sort of, affinity too.”

If there are those smaller moments of blessings in every single kind of job, and, my forms of small blessings of being in the nursing industry, is to see how the patients are willing, and able, to help one another out. But, this sort of a warmth, it’s, no longer a small kind of blessings, but on a grander scale.

So, this, is the kindness of a stranger, because this man empathized with his roommate’s situations, he’d made it his responsibility, to help his roommate anyway he can, and, it’s this sort of random acts of kindness that we need more of in this world right now…
