Lesson in Education & Making Donations

How to teach children from various group, to consider the facts, translated…

Mimi Chou one day afterschool, took out a very huge sticker, said, “Mom, I want to help the people in a vegetative state get more diapers.”

Why this thought? I’d inquired her, got the sticker from her, turns out, that it was, a fundraiser of a certain not-for-profit organization, with over thirty ten-dollar coin slots, every time a sticker is taken off, a ten-dollar coin is to be placed in the slots, and, after collecting thirty points, and returning the sheet back to the organizations, then, you can “help provide diapers for those in a vegetative state, along with a small souvenir too”.

do you know where the money goes, and what it’s used for???  Not my photograph.

This is something that’s kind of a trend now in the schools. On the beliefs of fundraising inside the schools, there are probably, these few beliefs: those who are for it believed, that it would help their young, to get in the habits of caring for the world they live in, to know, that the kids are living off well, to cherish what one already has; those who are against believed, that this can cause the peers to compare, and, the children from not-so-well-to-do backgrounds would be under great pressures, and, the kids not only didn’t gain the values of seeing what others are in need of, instead, they would learn, to ask for the money from the parents.

All of these, naturally, are worth, discussing, but, can we, return back to the primes of education, and take our kids along, in discussing these various issues too: the reason why these not-for-profit organizations exist is because there’s something WRONG with the society, then, what are the problems in the societies? Who became, the less fortunate? Are there more that we can do for them, other than just donating money and resources to them?

Think about a way to teach our young: we are NOT, raising funds for a specific organization, but are trying, to help the kids find the subjects which they cared a lot about on, and help them find ways, to personally connect to the causes. The key here, is for the children to start caring about these issues on their own, and NOT following the needs of the various organizations.

is this, convincing enough???  Not my photograph.

For instance, in the life education or social studies courses in the elementary years, along with the civics class in the middle and high school years, we can discuss with the students, “What are some issues surrounding the society right now? What are you most interested by?” the kids may feel that connection to the issues relating closely to their own lives, or the issues that the media reports on the most, for instance, stray animals, or wildlife may gain the most concerns, or the issues that are in the current events, like same-sex marriages; or it can be a problem that’s existed for long-term, like domestic violence, homeless, and the patients needing long-term care, etc., etc., etc.

After all of these discussion topics were placed on the tables, then, based off of the ages of the students, the teachers can then, devise different methods of tackling the subjects, for the younger children, you can lead them to find out “in this world, which organizations are working on the issues that they cared about”, and for the older students, other than finding the organizations, you can discuss with the students, “What, are some causes of the problems in the world”.

After finding a subject that you’re, passionate about, and organize the discussion groups, the following step is to establish a connection with the issues, and, this sort of a connection is still NOT in the realms of having the parents donate to the causes, or fill up the sticker slots, but for the children, to get personally involved in helping, to try to get a deeper understanding of the problems, to entering, the force, in helping turn these situations around.

So, this just shows, how we shouldn’t, just PAY people O-F-F, when they asked for assistance, and, there are, just, WAY too many people out there, who are raising funds, on “behalf of certain units”, but, how the HELL would we, those who donated, know, that the money goes where it needs to go, like to the certain organizations, instead of the people who were standing around on street corners, with those, donation boxes’ pockets, huh? So, we should, TEACH our kids to think critically, and, find out as much as we can, about the organizations we’re interested in helping out, then, start volunteering for the separate agencies, to see, if the values lined up right with our own.

how about now???  Not my photograph still…
