The kindness of the cabdriver was what got your wife to the hospital on time, and, that, was what she’d needed, as she was, about to go into labor! Translated…
My memory took me back, as I read, “The Kindness of the Community Bus Driver”.
Deep in the night in 1989, I’d heard my wife scream, “I’m having the baby now!”, I’d helped her get dressed, rushed downstairs to flag a cab; and, thankfully, there was, a cabdriver, who was, having his midnight snack at a super convenience shop close by. After I’d told him what was happening, he’d, dropped his midnight snack, immediately took me to my apartment. I’d, rushed to the second floor, to help my wife to get to the cab, and constantly calmed her; this was, her first pregnancy, we were all, flustered and panicky.
All the way to the Dongxing Road and Nanking E. Road intersections, my wife hollered, “My water broke!”, and, as the cab driver heard, he’d immediately, pushed down hard on the gas pedal. I was grateful, and worried for him, reminded him, “You will get pulled over for speeding.”, he’d replied, “So long as I explained to the officer why I was speeding, I’m sure, the officers would overlook it.”, and, I’d, promised that if he did get pulled over and fined, I will, take care of his fines.
As we’d arrived at Changgang Hospital, I’d paid the fare, and, as I’d recalled, that I’d wanted, to know what the driver’s name was, he’d already, sped off, I couldn’t even, write down his license plate yet. Close to around four, my daughter was born. Looking at my child, I can’t help, but feel grateful to the cabdriver, thanks to him, I was able, to have, my daughter safe and sound.
So, this, is under the extreme of all circumstances, your wife was about to have a child, and, thankfully, for the cabdriver who didn’t mind breaking the rules of speeding or running the red lights, and risk getting caught by the police, he’d, gotten you and your wife to the hospital on time, and, he’d not expected anything extra other than the cab fare you’d owed him for the ride to the hospitals. This, is how much kindness is in the world still.
