Life, the Obstacle Course

How it’d Felt, to Be, Pampered by You

Memories, assigned to the “addiction” of a specialty holiday drink during the holidays, translated…

My son texted the newest thing, that eggnogs are now, on the shelves from the supermarkets!

Eggnog is a North American drink, made with milk, Whiskey, and egg yolk, which my daughter loved very much, she’d needed to have it with hot cocoa, juices, and, even with red bean soups too, she could mix egg nog with just about anything.

the needed ingredients for that homemade eggnog around the holidays,  not my photograph…

Other than drinking it straight up, it can also, be made into an assortment of foods. My daughter and I often found the inspirations for creative uses for eggnogs at the supermarkets, whether it be dried fruits, cookies, or ice creams, everything that’s added with eggnogs, we’d needed to, bring it home with us.

And still, NO matter how much we’d loved our eggnogs, we can’t have it all year long, because eggnogs are a specialty item that comes out after Thanksgiving, in time, for the Christmas holidays. At first, I’d failed to notice just how season specific it is, one year, right before Christmas, I saw those cartons of eggnogs in the produce sections lining up, but, right after the holidays, I’d searched all over the ice bins, and, just couldn’t find it anywhere, and, I’d, beaten myself up over it, and, can only wait until the next year.

My daughter and I had our grievances toward how seasonal eggnog is, but, there was, NO way we can, lengthen the time it’d stayed on the shelves, and so, we can only, tune in on when it hits the shelves. As October approached this year, I’d started, looking into the refrigerated section of the supermarkets, but, each and every time, we’d returned, emptyhanded and disappointed, my son must’ve caught it, and started, chasing after the eggnogs with us too.

looks good, doesn’t it???  Not my photo…

My daughter’s love of eggnogs, was affected by me. That very first winter we’d come to the U.S. to live, I felt drawn, to the exotic foods, I’d “met” eggnog through an American friend, and naively believed, that if I can, start with, consuming the foods in the U.S., I would be able to, assimilate into the melting pot that is, the United States. But, after twenty years, my children were born and raised in the U.S., and, they’d still hung around, with their Asian peers, and I’d still, kept my food preferences from the Eastern world, and, eggnog was one of the limited food items that I’d become, addicted to, and, it’d become, like a migratory bird, that showed up, around the winter seasons at my house too.

Every winter, there would be, an assortment of eggnog drinks, showing up at my house, and, among these, would be my husband’s specially-made-for-me eggnog coffee; no matter where I am in the house, he’d not find it troublesome, and, would serve me that cup of eggnog coffee, to me. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, that sweetened taste of eggnog, was the sweet taste of being pampered.

Actually, homemade eggnogs are quite easy to make, but, I’d never bothered with it, instead, I was willing to, wait for an entire year, to meet back up with this love of mine again at the end of each and every year. Because, the eggnogs are not what’s keeping me, what it’d, signified to me, that wonderful date that came, once per year. My ordinary life became, more interesting, waiting for, the seasons of eggnogs.

So, this, is kind of a special thing for you, and, the eggnog is actually not what keeps your heart, but the way you’d felt, waiting for it to come around the end of the year, come Christmas time, as there are, so many wonderful memories that you had, assigned to the drinking of eggnogs, that, is what you wanted to taste over, and over again, isn’t it???
