Saying Goodbye to “I Can’t”

Grocery shopping, and cooking, I’m no good at either!

As I just got married, while my wife was cooking, she’d needed some green onions, and, asked me to get some, I came back with leeks; at that time, my wife finally knew, that I’d never, gone shopping for groceries, she’d taught me how to differentiate between the chives, the green onions, and the leeks; and, “Zhong” sounded a lot like the Chinese pronunciation of green onion, and so the one with the hollowed center would be the green onions.

Later on, as my two sons came, shopping for groceries became my job, slowly, I’d learned, that there were, broccolis and cauliflowers; that the peppers came in varieties of red, green, and yellow; and I can differentiate between cilantro and basils too, and, I’d found, that garlics are Siamese twins!

Then, my sons entered into private middle school, and needed to go into the night study programs, and because they’d already had the lunch from school, and I’d not wanted them to have their suppers at the schools too, and my wife often gets off work quite late, so, I’d learned to cook. At the start, because of how unfamiliar I was with cooking, I’d made a ton of mistakes, and I’d added the garlic pieces with the celery, loofa with green onions, tomato fried eggs with green onions, ginger, and garlic too, shaved the skin off of pumpkins, but, not the cucumbers…………

But, after years of training and practice, now, I am known, for specialty dishes with Chinese cabbage, beef strips, pork ribs, fatty pork, three cups chicken, sweet and sour fish, and, squid with basil.

For my family, I can’t say, that “I can’t go grocery shopping, or cooking”, I have NO right to do that.

So, this is still, all out of love, isn’t it? You’re cooking, because of love, and, you’d gone from not knowing what is what, and mixed and matched what you cooked, to an excellent chef, and I’m quite sure, that from being clueless in cooking to an expert at it, there must’ve been interesting things that had happened in the process, but, it’s amazing to see, how a man is willing to change, to learn to do something he’d never done before, for the sake of his family.
