The officer here, went beyond the call of HIS duty all right, from the Front Page Sections, translated…
A visually impaired student, Lu from National Taiwan University wanted to challenge himself by finishing a marathon, but because of his visual impairments, he couldn’t practice running alone, and so, he’d asked for an officer who is willing to accompany him in his running; the traffic department officer, Wang replied that when he’s on break, he will accompany him in running, six months later, he’d helped Lu win the gold medal, helped him achieve his dreams.
Lu pointed out, that in his last year of middle school, he was diagnosed with Leber hereditary optic neuropathy, he can only see the light out of his left eye, and his right eye deteriorated to he can only see no more than one meter ahead of him.
Lu recalled, that as he’d started training, he’d set his goals at six kilometers, back then, by the time he’d finished his fourth kilometer he was, panting like a dog, and started doubting himself, “Can I really finish the whole twenty-one kilometers six months from now?” and Wang, the officer, consoled with him like he was consoling a child, gave him the encouragements, “You certainly will!”
Lu said, that as he’d started practice running, he was very afraid, but Officer Wang had him take the end of a rope, and accompanied beside him, made him “believe in the eyes right next to him, the speedier they’d gotten, and, helped him overcome his fears too.”
On the fourth, Lu entered into the marathon competitions, officer Wang acted as the accompanying runner, led Lu by a towel, and encouraged him on the way, described to him the sights as they ran together past it; as he reached the finish lines, Lu realized that he’d completed his own “mission impossible”, and, had run for twenty-three kilometers, and it took him just two hours thirty-nine minutes, which won him the first place trophy for the visually impaired group.
Yesterday, Lu took the medals to the Zhonghe Police Substation to share his story and his joy of winning the trophy, and thanked Wang in person, for his assistance over six months’ time, to help make his dreams come true.
So, this, is the kindness of a police officer, he didn’t have to do what he did, but, because he wanted to help this young man live out his dreams, so, he’d taken the time, to accompany the student to run his marathon, and this is a story of kindness of strangers, and it’s really inspirational too.
