The Final Lesson of Life

What made you become a school teacher too??? Translated…

As the bell rang, the student ran to before me, asked, “Teacher, did you always want to become a teacher since you were a child?”, it’d, taken me back, in my memories.

In my middle school years, my parents were always stressed out about money, they’d even gotten into a lot of fights, and the atmosphere at home, wasn’t the least bit pleasant. After I’d gotten into high school, “I’ll make more money with a higher degree” became my primary motivation for studying hard; and still, there’s, that corner in my mind, that refused, to make a living, for the sole purpose of money, and so, with my reality, clashing with dreams, I’d, entered into my last year of high school.

One day, our homeroom instructor invited us to come along to a funeral procession of her former colleague—yes, a funeral. I, who’d never seen a Christian funeral, carried the mindset of curiosity, on a drizzling morn, rode in my teacher’s car, arrived to the Second Funeral Home in Taipei. As we’d got to the final destination, before we even entered into the funeral home, what I saw, stunned me—there were, long lines of people standing, waiting to enter! Even the passersby on the roads became curious, and started inquiring, “Who died?”, and, I, who was fazed too, got my answer in the funeral.

As those who came to the funeral went on the podium, to share the times they’d shared with the deceased, other than feeling the sorrows of the funeral, there’s also, that scent of gratitude there. Although I’d not known the instructor personally, but, from her close loved ones, her students, I’d understood what it meant, to “brighten up one’s own life, and brighten up the lives of other as well”, and at the same time, I’d found my way out, of my own situations: being able to support oneself, and also, as a blessing to someone else’s life too, wouldn’t that be, the best road to take?

And now, I can, work hard, in the field of education right now, it’s all due to what that instructor whom I’d never gotten to known had, blessed me with, I’m grateful toward her, for writing down the most beautiful story of her life, for me.

So, this, would be, the turning point of your life, isn’t it? Seeing all those who’d come to pay respect to that deceased school teacher that your homeroom instructor took you and your class to pay final respects to had, touched you, and, it’d made you realize, how important, teaching actually is, which is why, you’d also, become, a school teacher. It’s a wonder, how something so small in life, can make such a huge impact on someone else’s life, isn’t it???
