The Seventy-Three Year-Old Pastor, Huei-Ying Yang, Lived Alone in a Basement for Four Years, Went Shopping for Groceries to Make the Meals for the Homeless, and, She’d Used the Monetary Assistance from the Government for the Purpose, “I’d Connected with Them Emotionally Now, and I Can’t Just Walk Away”
As others aged, they’re living off easily, the seventy-three-year-old female pastor, Huei-Ying Yang from “Taipei Lighthouse Church”, not only didn’t get paid, had often taken money from her own pockets from the low-income assistance she received from the government, to make the meals for the homeless. In four years, she’d lived alone in a basement without any windows, coped with the roaches crawling on the floors, put up with getting bitten by rats and mice, and now, she’s faced with not making her rents, but, she’d just smiled and told, “I’d established a connection with these people, I can’t just, abandon them.”
Yang’s ancestry was from Hubei, and her husband followed the Chiangs to Taiwan, she’d not come to Taiwan until 2003. Six years ago after her husband died, she was left with nothing, she’d come up north, and, almost became homeless herself, but thankfully, the church took her in, she’d started living in the basement of the church, and helped out with the business in church, and provided the meals for the homeless population in Wanhua District.
After five in the evenings, the homeless in the community slowly marched into the church to find a place to rest for the evening, waited for the sermon at 5:30, followed by the free supper at six. And, the supper was prepared by Yang!
She did an assortment of tasks, shopping for the groceries, cleaning the foods, chopping them up, cooking, to giving sermons. She said, seeing these homeless people, it’d, impressed her deeply, she’d found, that a minor portion of the homeless population are lazy, but, most who lived on the streets have a story, their companies went bankrupt, helping out someone who’d fallen ill, couldn’t work, along with other reasons, that’s, caused them to turn homeless.
The Lighthouse Church was originally economically provided for by the founder, Pastor Ai-Ming Wang, but Pastor Wang passed away in April in the U.S., without the financial supports, the assistance to the homeless was put on halt. Yang said, “there’s no collection plate in this church, I’d even, put up my own money, the $7,200N.T. by the Department of Social Services for Low-Income I received, all went into the collection plate.”
The volunteers called her “Grandma Yang”, they’d discovered that she’d reheated up the soured foods to consume; that she’d dragged along a shopping basket to the local marketplaces to pick up the free unsold produces, and gone to the fruits and vegetable wholesales mart to pick up the rotten produce.
Now, the church couldn’t make the payments for rent for two months, the utilities bills, the phone bills too, causing the normally optimistic Yang who’d once stated, “No matter how you push it, if there’s no money, there’s NO money”, to lose sleep.
You can see the dedication of this woman, and, she’s, the embodiment of church values, she’d placed everybody else before herself, put her own needs on hold, and kept giving to the community, those who need, and, she’d not only put up money to continue this charitable act, and now, she’s facing some troubles, and, wouldn’t it be nice, if someone read this story, and decided to make donations to her cause???
